IWSAW Name Change

Thank you for agreeing to fill out our survey.

The Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at the Lebanese American University (LAU) was established in 1973 - the first of its kind in the Arab region, and among the first globally. Despite its name, the Institute has always addressed more than “women” and more than “studies”, operating at the intersection of academia and activism to examine the full range of gender issues from an intersectional and interdisciplinary lens. It is now time to launch a process to update this name! There are several strategic decisions to be made, including the use of women and gender and the geographic coverage. Additionally, there is concern with having a lengthy name in English, and even more so in Arabic. The acronym “IWSAW” lends itself to a variety of awkward pronunciations.
