Early Literacy Benchmarks - Context and Respondents
"Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. ... It encompasses all of a child's experiences with conversation, stories (oral and written), books, and print. Early literacy is not the teaching of reading. Not only is programming for very young children a core activity of libraries; it may be one of the most influential instances of what we do. New research shows that an intentional focus on early literacy content in public library storytimes can increase children's early literacy behaviors while at storytime. We are indeed essential to providing a strong educational launch for our community's children.
Looking ahead to future training offered at WLS, we want to benchmark the number of people engaged in programming for young children as well as the awareness and use of key early literacy practices. ALL staff that deliver programming to children and teens are asked to complete this brief survey. This includes full-time and part-time staff, librarians and others in a programming role. Please spread the word and share this link accordingly. A summary of the survey responses will be made available in February. Individual responses will not be shared.
