Chelmsford Public Consultation - Proposed Crematorium & Cemetery

On behalf of Chelmsford City Council, The CDS group would like to invite you to attend a drop-in planning consultation event on Thursday 27th August 2026 16:00 - 19:00 to discuss the proposed crematorium and cemetery project. The event will take place at Keene Hall, Watchouse Road, Chelmsford, CM2 8PT.
The results of the survey will provide us with critical information to take this project forward, with a scheme that both meets the needs of residents of Chelmsford and considers stakeholder feedback as part of the pre-planning application process.
This survey can be completed before or after the consultation event (the survey will close on the 4th September 2026).

The proposal will provide Chelmsford with bereavement provision for several decades and help the city council meet their Net Zero target. The development will deliver a new burial ground and crematorium which would replace the ageing facility at Writtle Road.
3.To what extent do you support the principle of providing a new crematorium and cemetery on the proposed site?
Delivering a new bereavement facility which improves the experience of visitors is a key principle of the design philosophy in this proposal. With the design of the buildings and grounds creating a calm, dignified and welcoming setting for people attending services or visiting memorial areas.

To allow the site to integrate sensitively into its surroundings, the proposed landscaping has been designed to have minimal impact on the existing landscape, utilised to provide a more reflective environment and create new habitats for local wildlife.
4.Which landscape features would you most like to see included?
The proposal will allow for a variety of memorialisation options throughout the site and accommodate a range of funeral service options for all demographics.
5.What types of memorial options would you like the site to provide?
It is recognised that the Chelmsford Cemetery and Crematorium at Writtle Road has been a key piece of community infrastructure in the city over the previous decades. Therefore, given the new location, this consultation is also seeking views on how the site can be managed respectfully for nearby residents, service users and visitors.

The accessibility of the facility was an important consideration when siting this proposal, ensuring people can get to the site via sustainable transport methods.
