Riverside School Naming Feedback

Background

Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools is building a new K-9 school in Riverside (at the corner of Riverside Drive and Rankin Drive), and we’d like your help choosing its name. The Riverside School Naming Committee, made up of our local priest, three Riverside parents, three trustees and the superintendent, has put together a first list of names. Under Board Policy 18, a school is named for Jesus Christ, Mary, a canonized saint, or another person tied to Catholic education or witness to the faith in Alberta. Your feedback will help the committee decide which names to recommend to the Board. This survey should take about 2-3 minutes to complete and will remain open until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 20. We welcome input from all GSACRD families, but we are especially interested in hearing from families who live in Riverside.
1.Do you currently live in the community of Riverside?
2.The names that the committee has proposed for consideration are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
  • Emmaus Catholic School: Emmaus recalls the Gospel story of the risen Jesus walking alongside two disciples on the road. It offers a model of accompaniment: no one walks alone; we walk together. The name speaks to the journey from childhood into adolescence and a school community where every student, regardless of ability or background, is valued, belongs, and is welcomed on a shared path of learning and faith.
  • Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School: This name points to Mary's love for God, her devotion, her purity of heart and her faithful response to God's call. It encourages students to act with courage, care for others and stay committed to what is good and right.
  • Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic School: This title honours Mary as a sign of hope, inviting students to trust in God's goodness and to bring hope to others. It has a Canadian history: the Church of Our Lady of Good Hope in Fort Good Hope, N.W.T., begun by Oblate missionaries in 1865, is a National Historic Site.
  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School: This title honours Mary as a source of comfort, strength and steady faith. It encourages students and staff to meet challenges with courage, persevere through hardship and support one another with compassion.
  • Our Lady of the Rivers Catholic School: This name ties Mary's protection to Riverside's place near the Sturgeon River. The title is best known from a shrine in Portage des Sioux, Missouri, where townspeople prayed to Mary during the 1951 floods, were spared, and raised a statue in her honour. It speaks of trust in Mary's intercession and care.
  • Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School: The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is October 7, the date of the 1571 naval victory at Lepanto, which Pope St. Pius V attributed to the prayer of the Rosary. The Rosary invites students into prayer and reflection on the life of Jesus alongside his mother.
