* 1. You are being asked to participate in a research study about behavior on Facebook Your participation will involve responding to questions about your behaviors on Facebook. We will be asking you to record your interactions with a specific individual on Facebook. We will also be asking you to respond to survey items regarding your relationship with this person.

Please only complete this survey if you are 18 year old or older.

Please read this form and ask any questions that you may have before agreeing to be in the research.

This study will consist of THREE parts:
Part one: You will fill out a survey that will take ten to fifteen minutes regarding one of your Facebook friends. During part one we will ask you for a valid email address so that we can contact you regarding parts two and three. We will ONLY use your email address to contact you about the study.

Part two: Part two will take approximately four weeks. We will ask you to monitor how often you communicate with one of your Facebook friends. We will ask you to fill out a short survey each day for four weeks regarding how often you communicated with that individual. We may send you email reminders to fill out this short survey. Each survey is expected to take 5 minutes or less.

Part three: At the end of the four weeks will we send you an email with a final survey for you to fill out regarding your Facebook friend. This survey is expected to take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

If you agree to be a participant in this research, we would ask that you continue on and complete this online questionnaire. You may stop at any time and skip any question that you do not wish to answer.

Risks and Benefits
This research study is not thought to have any risks above and beyond normal everyday activity. The researchers will be collecting your email address in order to contact you regarding part two and three of the study. We will only use this information to contact you regarding the study and lists of email addresses will be destroyed upon completion of the data collection.

Similarly there are no direct benefits to the research participants. However, it is hoped that the study will result in increased knowledge about how communication on social network sites affects friendships.

Participants are eligible for extra credit or course credit through the Department of Communication's Participant Pool. This study is worth three hours of credit. Participants may divide their credit over three separate courses if they so desire. Extra Credit information will be taken at the end of Time 2.

The information in this research will be kept confidential. No identifying markers will be kept with the data file. All data will be anonymized. No reference will be made in oral or written reports that could link participants to the research. Lists of email addresses and participant codes will be destroyed once the Time 2 data collection is complete.

Voluntary Participation
You do not have to perform any activity you do not want to. You do not have to answer any question you do not want to answer. Participation in this study is voluntary. If you decide to participate, you may withdraw from the study at anytime without penalty and without loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
