* 1. We’ve had another 100-year storm and water has flooded your basement, rising higher than the electrical outlets in your downstairs rec room. You know that electricity and water don’t mix and you’re worried that a short-circuit in one of the outlets could cause a fire. What should you do?

Get down there in water up to your knees and turn off the service panel breaker for the basement circuits. (Maybe you’ll be safe if you climb on a chair to get out of the water when you do this.)

Wait for the water to recede until it is below the outlets then test them by plugging in a lamp to see if they still work or blow a circuit breaker.

Don’t wait – call 911 to report a hazard.

Wait for the basement to dry and contact an electrician to test the circuits and panel to be sure they are operating safely and haven’t been damaged.

* 2. A wind-storm has knocked out power to your neighborhood. At least it looks like it because your neighbors’ homes are dark. It’s nearly 11PM, a good hour since the power went out and the wind has died down. You take your dog outside for a walk and see a line down and laying in the road at the foot of the pole on the corner, one house away. What do you do?

Walk closer but stop at least 35 feet from wire. You remember that you need to stay back that distance just in case the wire is live. There’s no sign of electricity flowing anywhere around the line or road so you just take Sparky home and go to bed.

You can’t see very well so, just to be sure, you get within 10 feet so your flashlight can reach and at this point you can hear some kind of engine sound. You assume it’s an MGED crew nearby and get even closer to the corner to flag them down.

You go back to your yard and walk Sparky there. Then you call us to report the downed line and go to bed.

* 3. Your neighbor is out trimming a tree that has grown too close to his roof. He has a ladder against the tree but you can see the electric service line to his home is running through the tree branches. He hollers over asking you to help him move the ladder to get up a little higher into the tree. What do you say to him?

Do you see that service line? It might be contacting one of the branches and it could energize that ladder and shock anyone touching it. We’d better call a professional who knows how to work around electric lines.

OK. But we better keep the ladder away from that electric line way up there. If we keep the ladder below it, you should be fine.

Well, your service line is pretty new and looks insulated (not bare wire) so it must be safe. Let me give you a hand.

* 4. Another nor’easter is coming fast. Your lovely home is surrounded by old-growth trees, some a little too close. In the last storm, one of them fell within inches of your roof and took out your service line from the pole, leaving you in the dark for days. Even now, one is ominously leaning in the same direction. The latest storm report says the worst wind will be tomorrow morning. What do you do now?

Fill up the fridge, prepare the generator and plan to sleep in the basement until the storm passes.

Pull my storm kit together, including batteries, first aid kit, extra water and any medication to be ready for an extended outage.

Call my brother to bring his chainsaw and get that tree down ASAP. (What could go wrong?)

* 5. The storm has passed and you’re out driving but many roads are blocked by huge fallen trees. You head down Pine Street and see a car whose front end is crushed by a giant fallen pine. The driver is still inside and unharmed. But a broken wire is laying across the top of the car and you see his door opening so he might step out. What should you do?

Park, jump out to help the driver. He looks pretty shaken up.

Drive up, roll down the window to tell him to stay in the car in case the line is LIVE.

Stay in your car and back up at least a few car lengths away from the accident and call 911 for help.

Park, jump out, stay across the street and shout to him to stay inside the car and you’ll get help.
