Consent to Participate

You are being invited to participate in a research study. Research is a way of gaining new knowledge. The purpose of this research study is to gain knowledge of minority oral health providers’ perceptions and attitudes regarding minority oral health disparities, workforce diversity in the United States, practice experiences in the dental field, and potential strategies to improve workforce diversity in the U.S.

To participate in this research, you must be an oral health professional (dentists, dental hygienists, advanced dental hygiene practitioners, and advanced/dental therapist), at least 18 years of age, who identifies as an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority in the dental field, who is currently practicing in their respective specialty in the United States. In this study, an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority is one who identifies as African American/Black,
Hispanic/Latino, or Native America/Alaska Native. If you are not an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority oral health professional, or if you are not at least 18 years of age, you should not participate.

This research asks you to read and respond to some materials regarding your perceptions and practice experiences in the dental field. Participation will take 10-15 minutes.

You do not need to participate in this research. There is no penalty for deciding not to participate.

This research is not designed to provide benefit directly to those who choose to participate. The primary benefit of this study will be the opportunity to contribute to knowledge about diversity within the dental workforce and potential strategies to improve diversity in the field. The only known risk of participating is a small chance that someone outside the research team would be able to see the data you provide or will know, as a result of your participation in the drawing, that you participated in this research. Your participation in the drawing will not be linked to your survey responses, which will be collected anonymously.

You will not be compensated for your participation. However, after completing the survey, you have the option to enter in a drawing, using a link not connected to your survey response, for a chance to win a $50 digital Amazon gift card.

No identifying information will be collected as part of the research survey itself, but your email address will be required if you enter the drawing. The identity of those who enter the gift card drawing and all survey responses will be kept separate and confidential. For data analysis purposes, anonymous, non-identifying data will be downloaded from SurveyMonkey and kept in password protected laptops of both the PI and the statistician. Data will be destroyed 3-years after the completion of the study.
