We are seeking people who would like to train as a volunteer advocate and help people who are disadvantaged, disabled or too distressed to make their voice heard. This could be as a volunteer citizen, peer or self advocate.

However if you don't want to train as a volunteer advocate you can support us in a number of other ways such as helping us out at one of our local offices, help with fundraising, promoting our services and making local people aware of them, talking to other groups about POhWER or help writing our local newsletters. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) merged in December 2012 to form the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The DBS still carries out the same functions as the CRB and ISA, helping organisations prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups. What was a CRB check is now called a Disclosure and Barring Certificate. Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. POhWER will look at the nature of the work and the circumstances and background of your offences. We encourage all volunteers to provide details of their criminal record at an early stage in the application process.
