Testing growth scenarios for the future

Growth is something that can enhance our community wellbeing if it’s planned for. We can make choices to grow well.

We are working with our partners at Central Government and Kāi Tahu on a Spatial Plan, looking out to 2050 and beyond.

Right now, you have an opportunity to have a say and make sure our district can ‘grow well’ for the next 30 years and for generations to come.

Three scenarios have been developed for the Upper Clutha and Wakatipu. They have emerged from a series of workshops, masterplans, the Proposed District Plan, My Place sessions and other community engagement.

Scenario planning helps construct a more robust picture of what different growth looks like.  It allows us to test different growth options against the Spatial Plan principles and spatial outcomes.  We are interested in what form we want for the future, and how it can accommodate different growth rates.  Acknowledging that the future is difficult to predict with any certainty.

The scenarios are:
  • Main Centres
  • Connected Settlements
  • Dispersed / Expansive
They are purposefully extreme and it's important to note that we are not promoting any particular scenario as a preferred option.

What we land with may be a combination of all three or something entirely different. Your feedback will help us develop a Draft Spatial Plan that will be released for formal consultation in Autumn 2020.

Please review each of the scenarios that follow and let us know your thoughts as well as any further feedback you might have.

Feedback closes at 5.00pm on 1 December 2019.
