Overview

This form is for the purpose of applying for the next “When Conversation Turns to Suicide” Training as presented by the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community (RLC) with the main purpose of supporting people who are interested in learning about and using the Alternatives to Suicide approach in 1:1 and other settings beyond groups.

PLEASE NOTE: This training is being held ON-LINE via Zoom. This is not something we intend to do often, and is strictly to bridge the gap while the COVID-19 pandemic is happening. In general, we recommend in person trainings wherever possible.

The Alternatives to Suicide approach was developed by the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community (RLC) in 2009. It started as a peer-to-peer group-focused approach. From there, it was expanded into a broader approach useful in an array of interactions. Rather than assessment and risk, these the approach is based on creating a non-judgmental space in which to discuss suicide and other taboo topics, and supporting people to move through some of the dark places they can sometimes can get stuck.

You can learn more about the approach at www.communitypsychology.com/new-approach-to-suicide/.

Please complete the application below in its entirety no later than Wednesday, October 21, 2020, in order to be considered for this training. We will be notifying everyone about whether or not they have a spot in the training at the start of the following week.

See Below for Further Training Details:

TRAINING DATES AND TIMES:  Dates for the training are scheduled for Mondays December 7 and 14 AND Tuesdays, December 8 and 15, 1pm to 5pm Eastern.  Reading homework may be assigned ahead of time and/or during the class. Attendance at all 4 sessions is required to complete the training.

TRAINING PREREQUISITES:  There are no pre-requisites for attending this training, other than an investment in the topic of suicide and an openness to learning about the Alternatives to Suicide approach.

COST:  We offer many trainings for free, and try our best to keep any ones that we charge for as low cost as possible. In the case of our on-line charges, we are requesting a few as follows:

  • $150 for people who are based OUTSIDE of Massachusetts, and have an organization that is able to pay for their spot.
  • $100 for people who are based INSIDE of Massachusetts and have an organization that is able to pay for their spot.
  • $50 for people who do not have an organization that is able to pay, but who are able to pay for themselves.
  • $20 for students and others with lower income.
  • $0 for people who have low or no income, and no organization to assist them in paying.
These fees help cover trainer time, including the time needed to adapt in person trainings to an on-line format.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO:  This training is open to anyone (clinician, student, friend, family member, peer supporter, etc.) who is interested in learning about this approach and improving their ability to support people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts. This training is NOT focused on starting or facilitating Alternatives to Suicide groups. Anyone looking specifically to start an Alternatives to Suicide group should instead look for an Alternatives to Suicide facilitator training.
