Participant Information Sheet

You are being invited to take part in an online research study. It is important for you to understand why the research is being carried out and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully and feel free to contact the researcher or research supervisor if there is anything that is unclear or if you would like more information (contact details can be found at the end of the information sheet). As always participation is voluntary so please take your time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.
What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to enhance our understanding as to how people use Facebook.

Who can participate in the study and how will it be conducted?
This particular study is for level 4-6 psychology students at the University of Wolverhampton. The study is based completely online and you will be required to fill in a demographic questionnaire.
The survey will take approximately 30 minutes but there is no set time limit. You may omit from answering any questions which make you feel uncomfortable or you can withdraw from the study at any point by exiting the survey. If you are happy to take part in this study then you will be required to read and complete an online consent form which indicates what is required of you and that you agree to all the terms and conditions. You will then be directed to the study. In order to take part, you should have a Facebook account as our interest is on how people use Facebook.

What are the risks/benefits?
There are no physical or psychological risk associated with this study but if any distress is caused or if you do find any of the material used upsetting or uncomfortable you are not obliged to answer those questions. Also you are free to contact the researcher or supervisor to address any concerns which may arise from you taking part in this study.
The benefits of participating in this study include research credits and also your input could be used in order to understand more and gain further knowledge into the area of psychology in which intensive Facebook use could be related to personality and self-esteem.

Can I withdraw at any time from the study?
Your participation in this study is voluntary and if you decide not to participate at any point up until the survey has been submitted then you are allowed to do so without any reason or consequence. However due to the data being grouped and made anonymous after collection it is impossible to withdraw any data given after the submission of the survey.

What will happen to the data you have provided?
Once the survey has been submitted it will be kept securely on the survey website used for this study. A copy will also be kept securely on a password protected computer which only the researcher, research supervisor and academics directly involved in the study will have direct access to. Data given will be kept for 2 years after which all the data collected will be destroyed. The collated and analysed findings of this study will be published in the researchers dissertation; however participates who took part will not be identifiable.
