The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is seeking experts to serve on the ASAM Criteria Task Group on Interoperable Data Standards. This group will support ASAM’s efforts to explore, define, and recommend approaches for integrating interoperable data standards into ASAM tools and resources related to substance use disorder (SUD) assessment and treatment planning.
BackgroundThe ASAM Criteria Task Group on Interoperable Data Standards is convened to explore, define, and recommend ways to integrate interoperable data standards into ASAM tools and resources for SUD assessment and treatment planning.
As health systems, payers, EHRs, and HIEs move toward interoperable data sharing and standardized documentation, there is an increasing need for clear and consistent ontologies and data elements for SUD assessment and treatment planning. The task group will help identify and prioritize key data elements within ASAM resources, such as the Level of Care Assessment Guide and Treatment Planning Assessment, and map them to existing national standards (e.g., EHRs, USCDI, LOINC, SNOMED, HL7, FHIR), identifying gaps where they exist.
The group’s recommendations will focus on integrating core data standards into ASAM tools and products and developing suggestions to fill existing gaps in standards that would enhance communication regarding SUD treatment. This effort will support consistent data collection, future research, quality improvement, and refinement of The ASAM Criteria.
The work is exploratory and recommendatory and will not set reimbursement policy or dictate standards for the broader field.
