On 18 April 2017, the Federal Government announced that the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with the completely new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March 2018.

Changes to Occupations List/s:
  • The Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) has been reduced by 216 occupations and renamed the Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL), to be reviewed every 6 months;
  • The Skilled Occupations List (SOL) will be renamed the new Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL),  and assessed as being of high value to the Australian economy and aligning to the Government’s longer term training and workforce strategies. 
Changes to these occupations lists and eligibility will affect the following visas:
  • 457 - Temporary Work (Skilled) visa, to be replaced with a new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March 2018;
  • 186 - Employer Nominations Scheme (ENS) visa;
  • 187 - Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa;
  • 189 - Skilled Independent visa;
  • 190 - Skilled Nominated visa;
  • 489 - Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa.
