Conference
Active participation in democracy and society –
building a strong foundation in communities
Wednesday 25 March 2015
Townhead Village Hall, Glasgow
10.30 am (Registration and coffees from 1.00) – 4 pm
Cost: Community groups £20. All others £30
There is a ferment of discussion about democracy and empowering citizens at national, local and community levels. But structural reforms alone are unlikely to engage people’s imagination and efforts - unless they are rooted in the way that people act together with others in their communities. Community development work aimed at enabling participation on an equal basis is crucial.
This public conference looks at a wide range of current ideas and developments and asks how we can make sure that they are based in and on communities.
Speakers:
Innovative approaches to involvement – Oliver Escobar, Edinburgh University
A neighbourhood approach to civic health – Gary Malone, Voluntary Action Angus
(invited) Marco Biagi, MSP, Minister for Local Government and Community Empowerment
Workshop and World Cafe discussions (to be confirmed) on local participatory democracy, participatory budgeting, neighbourhood community development work, community empowerment, community organising, etc.
Townhead Village Hall is at 60, St Mungo Avenue, Glasgow G4 0PL. It is 10-15 minutes’ walk from Queen Street Station, less from Buchanan Street Bus Station.
To reserve places please go to: Places are limited to three per organisation.
