Psychometric Validation of the Snowden Military Transition Adjustment Scale (SMTAS) and the Snowden Military Neglect Index (SMNI) IRB # 26-1981

1.You are invited to participate in a research study examining veteran transition experiences and perception of neglect during military service. The purpose of this research is to further evaluate two researcher-developed questionnaires, the Snowden Military Transition Adjusment Scale (SMTAS) and the Snowden Military Neglect Index (SMNI), to determine whether they are reliable and valid measures of these experiences. The findings from this study may contribute to future research and improve assessment of veteran reintegration experiences.

This study is being conducted by Marissa Snowden, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dr. Pius Nyutu, professor in the Department of Psychology at Fayetteville State University. Approximately 300 United States military veterans will be invited to participate in this study.

If you decide to participate, you will complete a one-time anonymous online survey. To participate, you must be at least 18 years of age and have previously served in the United States military. The survey includes questions about your demographic background, military experiences, transition to civilian life, and perceptions of neglect during military service. Participation is voluntary. You may discontinue participation at any time before submitting your survey without penalty. There are no major risks anticipated from participating in this study. Some participants may experience emotional discomfort while reflecting on their military experiences or transition to civilian life. If you experience distress, mental health and veteran support resources will be provided at the conclusion of the survey. Participants are not expected to receive any direct benefits; however, this research may contribute to improved understanding and assessment of veteran transition experiences. Your survey responses will be anonymous. No personally identifying information will be collected as part of the research survey. Although reasonable measures will be taken to protect your confidentiality, complete confidentiality cannot be guaranteed when transmitting information over the internet. At the conclusion of the survey, you will have the option to enter a drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. If you choose to participate in the drawing, you will be directed to a separate survey where you may voluntarily provide your email address. Your email address will not be linked to your survey responses, will be stored separately from the research data, and will be used only for administering the drawing. Email addresses will be permanently deleted after the drawing has been completed.

Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your relationship with Fayetteville State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or any veterans' organization through which you learned about this study. If you choose to participate, you are free to withdraw from the study at any time before submitting your responses. If you have questions about this research, please contact:
