West Virginia Teachers - Complete Application by 5 pm, 1 November 2025

Your students can be part of NASA’s efforts to build a long term human presence on the Moon by joining a teacher-led student global science challenge to see who can grow the best crops using lunar regolith simulant. The Plant the Moon Challenge is aligned with Artemis, NASA’s mission to the Moon.

About the program: The Plant the Moon Challenge NASA Regional Expansion Project engages students in plant growth research that explores what crops and lunar regolith soil mixtures NASA scientists consider for future lunar habitats.
Participating Educators Receive:
•Mentoring from West Virginia Space Grant Consortium (WVSGC) and the Plant the Moon Challenge teams
•A lunar regolith simulant kit that contains digital project guide, 10 small pots, 10 N95 masks, and a pH meter. (A kit is designed to serve at least 10 students.)
•A $100 stipend for project supplies (per kit)
•Professional development about NASA’s Artemis mission and related STEM content
•Opportunity for students to engage in STEM activities and virtual events that highlight NASA’s Artemis mission
Eligibility: Team coaches can be middle or high school teachers or organizations such as Girl or Boy Scouts or 4-H clubs that work with this age group. The project has broad appeal to science, biology, botany, earth science, and agricultural and other related disciplines.
Timeline: The kits are mailed out in early January. Team experimental designs are submitted in mid January, and plant growth begins in late January. Final reports are due in mid-April.
