Visiting Spanish Teacher Scheme - Year 3 Pilot

The Visiting Spanish Teacher Scheme is an exciting pilot venture between the Department of Education (DoE) in Ireland and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain (MECS).

This scheme has been created to address the shortage of qualified Spanish teachers in Ireland. Similar programmes have been running successfully in other jurisdictions for many years. In addition, the scheme offers students in Irish post-primary schools the opportunity to learn how to interact, communicate, understand and respect other cultures and gives schools the opportunity to develop relationships and exchanges with the Spanish schools that these teachers are coming from.

The Visiting Teacher from Spain Scheme will provide Irish schools with the opportunity to fill existing vacant Spanish teaching positions. The scheme offers you the opportunity to recruit highly qualified Spanish teachers for a period of up to two years. Visiting teachers from Spain are certified Spanish language teachers with a minimum of two years of experience.

The Visiting Teachers from Spain scheme will be overseen by the Department of Education and implemented by Post-Primary Languages Ireland.

We have a 22hr post available for a Spanish teacher with a minimum of 15 hours of Spanish

We can provide interview dates for teachers by the beginning of April for interviews to be conducted between mid and late April

We can provide a letter of appointment for a teacher that is successful at interview by mid- May

We can issue a contract to the teacher at the end of August once the teacher has successfully registered with the Teaching Council

We can assist the teacher with sourcing accommodation during the month of May

We facilitate the Droichead programme in our school and would encourage the VST to participate in this

We will provide induction and orientation relevant to our particular school and ongoing support (PPLI will provide general induction and orientation)

We will ensure that public health guidelines and Department of Education protocol are adhered to

We will submit a final report on the success of the programme at the end of the academic year
