When appropriate (this award is not necessarily given every year) the Board of Directors of the Instructional Technology Council (ITC) selects an individual or individuals to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.  The recipient must have been employed for a significant portion of his or her career by a community college or a community college district or consortia office where the district or consortium has a predominant focus on public institutions that offer two-year associate’s degrees or diplomas.  It is often, but not necessarily, given to someone who has recently retired.

The nominee must have advocated for and advanced instructional technology within the community college arena. It is important to provide examples of how the nominee has been involved with instructional technology, not only internally within an institution but also externally, through activities including involvement on boards of directors, committees, and/or community advocacy groups working to advance the field. The nominee must have shown leadership including efforts to improve distance education, academic programming, and student services.  The nominee must also have supported the mission, goals, and activities of the Instructional Technology Council.

Examples of this work include but are not limited to: extensive service on the ITC Board or on ITC committees or activities; involvement with grants or special projects which have promoted and/or advanced instructional technology and/or distance education; implementation of institutional or system-level changes that have occurred as a result of the nominee’s leadership and advocacy; involvement with state and federal distance education legislation; promoting distance education in higher education; advocating for appropriate technology and infrastructure to advance instructional technology in higher education; securing funds for distance education; developing new distance education programs in higher education; creating or enhancing partnerships outside the nominee's organization; speaking at events to promote distance education and best
