About the Project
Why is RDA Hunter leading this work?
As the Australian Government’s regional development organisation in the Hunter, RDA Hunter plays a critical role in delivering the Government’s vision for regional Australia through the implementation of the Regional Development Australia Charter and support for the Regional Investment Framework. Since 2009, we have worked across government, industry, research and community sectors to identify regional priorities, inform decision-making, attract investment and support long-term economic development. This work has given us a deep understanding of the forces shaping the Hunter’s economy and a strong track record in helping the region respond to change and capitalise on emerging opportunities.
The Hunter Global Competitiveness Initiative builds on this foundation, helping ensure the region remains competitive, attracts investment and talent, and is well positioned for future growth.
What are we doing?
RDA Hunter has commenced a significant body of work focused on identifying opportunities to support the Region’s long-term economic prosperity and global competitiveness – spearheaded by the development of the Hunter Economic Development & Global Competitiveness Strategy. Over the next two years this work will include an analysis of global shifts and a broader program of benchmarking, economic insights, industry engagement, research and discussion.
Why does the region need it?
Around the world, leading regions are examining the economic, technological and demographic changes shaping their future competitiveness. OECD research consistently shows that regions play an important role in driving national economic performance, productivity and innovation. As competition for investment, talent and emerging industries intensifies, regions that understand global shifts and respond proactively are in a better position to attract jobs, investment and opportunity.
What’s our approach?
Our work will focus on understanding the economic, technological and demographic shifts shaping leading regions around the world, and how these same trends are likely to influence the Hunter’s future. By examining best-practice approaches and successful regional models, we’ll identify ways to respond proactively, strengthen our competitive position and prepare for emerging challenges and opportunities.
