The Equity Institute of YWCA Evanston/North Shore offers workshops, usually 2 1/2 hours long, to organizations or individuals to support them on their equity journeys. To better serve our constituents, we'd like to know the times that are most convenient for these workshops to be held. Implicit Bias - Consciously or not, all of us carry biases towards individuals and/or groups. We look at what implicit bias is and how it works. Participants will examine their own biases and identify how those show up. Tips for how both individuals and organizations can manage bias are provided.

Understanding Power and Privilege - As we consider topics of race, gender, ableism, heterosexism, and ageism, this workshop explores: What privilege is, who has it and how it works for them, as well as how power and privilege are connected, and how the misuse of power and privilege become oppression.

Developing Cultural Competence - What does it mean to be culturally competent? We’ll explore how an organization can become authentically inclusive and understanding of a variety of cultures, races, abilities, and differences, and identify changes that can be made by organizations and by individuals to transform the climate.

Microaggressions: Intent vs. Impact - What are microaggressions? How can they hurt people if they weren’t intended in a hurtful way? How do they impact our work, worship, community environments? What are helpful responses when I see, commit, or have someone use a microaggression on me?

Talking about Racism: It's Not as Hard as We Make It (Introductory) - Why have many in society made this topic so difficult to discuss? How can we erase the stigma and normalize the conversation, so we can actually address issues of racism? And when someone says “I don’t even notice race” as their response to facing differences, they are saying that they don’t notice the full identify of the other person. How do we move from “colorblind” to “color conscious”?

Socialization - How have we been socialized to play certain roles, based on our identities? How are we affected by issues of oppression? How do we help maintain an oppressive system based on power?

Liberation - What is the cycle of liberation? What do we need in order to be liberated, or participate in the liberation of others? Using a framework provided, how do we develop a personal agenda for action?
