1. AFLOWT Introduction and Bio

AFLOWT (Accelerating market uptake of Floating Offshore Wind Technology) is an Interreg funded project aiming to demonstrate the survivability and cost-competitiveness of floating offshore wind (FOW) technology. The five-year project, launched in 2019, is led by EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) working with technology partner SAIPEM and test site owner SEAI, along with MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands), UCC (University College Cork), ESB (Electricity Supply Board), Fraunhofer IWES (Institute for Wind Energy Systems), Febus Optics, and KSS (Kraken Subsea Solutions). The deployment of SAIPEM’s Hexafloat technology will take place along the French Mediterranean coast at the MISTRAL test site. Another test site, the Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS), is being developed in Ireland and is expected to be ready for offshore energy technology deployment by the end of the AFLOWT project in 2023.

Survey objectives:
1.    Identify technology developer and investor knowledge requirements with respect to open ocean test sites
2.    Highlight the critical risk areas in relation to FOW developer engagement and test site experience
3.    Identify alternative approaches to existing test sites
