As part of the work led by Disability Rights UK and supported by the
Disability & Physical Activity Impact Collective, we have developed a survey for physical activity providers, with questions co-designed by members of the Collective. The survey aims to better understand the challenges providers may face when delivering physical activity opportunities for Disabled people, as well as the reasons why some providers may not currently offer such activities.
The findings will help us explore whether providers’ experiences align with what Disabled people are telling us. While much attention is rightly given to the barriers faced by Disabled people themselves, it is also important to understand the practical, organisational, and systemic challenges experienced by providers.
Evidence highlights the importance of this work. A recent UK Government
publication on accessibility of products and services found that among respondents who identified sport and exercise as one of their three most inaccessible sectors, 85% cited gyms and leisure centres as presenting the greatest barriers. Although we undertake significant work to support Disabled people and professionals, access to facilities remains a critical factor in whether people are able to attend or participate in physical activity.
Collecting data on disability, physical activity, and inclusive provision is essential. It helps to identify inequalities in participation, including the fact that Disabled people are significantly more likely to be inactive than non-disabled people, often due to structural, social, and environmental barriers. This evidence supports providers and policymakers to design targeted interventions, allocate resources effectively, and measure progress over time. By strengthening the evidence base and sharing learning, we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable sport and physical activity system.
