Thank you to all who entered our first ever "This Old Newspaper?!" contest, a fun, feel good awareness campaign for the industry. We asked your readers to recycle newspapers into something new, and wow, did they ever!

We now ask for your help in voting for the entries you like the most. We have included three categories:

Open - includes all entries

Junior - entries by our junior readers, those age 12 and under.

Family/Group - entries completed by a group of two or more.

1. "Unicorn Hat" by Abigail Dickens, Age 4, Ridgetown Independent News

Abby wanted a unicorn hat so we made a support out of cardboard and added styrofoam for the horn. Newspaper was stapled and papier-mâchéd on, then sparkly paint was added (of course)! Finally, a pair of pink ears. Perfect, says Abby.

2. "Alauna and Dog" by Alauna Ferguson, Age 12, Dorchester Signpost

Fashion and design is so fun, this project gave me a chance to keep busy during covid, I sketched out my idea and got to it, of course things don’t always go to plan. There is a difference between my drawing and the finished piece. I made sure to include my dog Bentley because he is my best friend.

4. "Halloween Spider" by Amanda Kennedy, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

A paper mache spider for Halloween made from balloons, coat hangers for legs and a paper towel roll neck. Finally a coat of purple spray paint and eight googly eyes.

5. "Chinese Inspired Dragon" by Amelia Murray, Uxbridge Cosmos

Chinese-inspired dragon made from layers of newspaper, adhered with matte medium to create a paper maché effect. Masking tape was used to secure the form, and paper-based clay was used for the horn ridges, lips and eyelids. Colour was added with acrylic paint.

6. "Doggy Duplicate" by Audrey Dubler, Age 10, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

I just love my dog Sammy so much that I wanted to make a sculpture of him. I love to craft and make things so I made a cardboard frame for his body and then balled up paper for the head and legs and then used paper maché all over the outside. I hot glued his legs, head and tail on.

7. "The Headline Hemline" by Colleen Gray & Laurie Brohman, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

Our creation is a tribute to our home, our heritage, and the way our country, our province and our community have kept us safe during the current epidemic. Our creation started as a sketch of a party dress. We decided to keep it simple, as it represents who we are, two sisters, simple people. We decided to make this dress show that we are proud to be residents of Wellington County, and chose embellishments to include many different parts of the county.

8. "Arctic Express" by Edie-Rae Hudgin, Age 8, Port Perry, The Standard Newspaper

Northern Lights the polar bear and I, Chip the penguin are best friends. We do everything together. We mean it, we had a great plan. We were going to make an iceberg slide that goes right into the water. It took us days to finish by carving and smoothing the ice. Northern Lights was the first to give it a whirl. He said the iceberg slide was as fast as lightning. I can't wait to give it a try.

9. "The Orono Weekly COVID Times" by Helen Bajorek & Jean-Michel Komarnicki, Orono Weekly Times

Helen writes poetry. Jean-Michel is a photographer and designs books. Together, Jean-Michel and Helen are the youmeus project. Helen’s approach to “This Old Newspaper?!” reader contest was through a poetic lens. For this challenge, Helen was naturally drawn to Blackout [redacted] poetic form, used most often to extract poems from newspapers and books.
Jean-Michel envisioned a book that stayed true to the Orono Weekly Times size and format.
Helen decided to use a range of colours for her ‘redactions’ to create contrast, or to complement either existing colour on a page or the visual form and/or representation of each poem. Once the redactions were completed and the poems were written and designed by Helen, it was time to decide how to integrate each poem onto the page. This is where Jean-Michel’s expertise came in to assemble the book.
Finally, Helen stitched the binding – holding together the stories extracted from the Orono Weekly Times during five+ months of Covid-19 times.
Overall, this project has been a pleasant creative distraction for Helen and Jean-Michel, both at-risk during these exceptional times.

The Youmeus Project

10. "Dress and Hat" by Isla Williams, Age 12, Port Perry, The Standard Newspaper

"I wanted you to be able to see the writing on it, so you could instantly tell it was made out of newspaper." A large portion of the dress is decorated with paper flowers as well. She did not want to paint the flowers because she wanted people to know they were made out of paper as well. The dress as a whole took her about 10 hours to make. She spent this time gluing and taping the newspapers together and creating the decorative flowers. Isla made the dress on her own, using her interest in sewing and painting to fuel her passion.

11. "Cat Bed" by Jennifer Parsons, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

This cat bed is made completely of rolled tubes of newspaper. It is created in the same way one would weave a basket, with forms used to help it take shape. Glue is only used at strategic points during the weaving, namely to keep the rolled tube together (so it doesn't unravel) and when the finishing the "trim" as the paper tubes do not hold the same tension as traditional weaving material.
When finished, the cat bed is very flexible, yet strong, surprising for something made only of paper!

12. "Newspapers Zipper" by Kaitlyn Poncelet, Haliburton County Echo

By using recycled newspapers I made a Zipper that could stand up on its own. I decided to make a Zipper as I wanted to take an ordinary object and make it life sized to represent its importance. To allow it to stand up, there was a wire frame wrapped in many layers of newspaper to create the structural support that it needed. The newspaper was painted and a layer of fabric was added. Finally, carefully cut pieces were added to the Zipper for the teeth and tab to finish the look of a Zipper coming to life.

13. "Bodies of Work" by Kalev Jaason, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

Inspiration: I love the idea of being able to create something with my hands, seeing it come to life, and giving it a form. There is something about using discarded items or things that have very little value to most people like old newspapers that really appeals to me. The fact that the materials are basically free makes it accessible and affordable for me.
'Blue Chip Art' has existed for years. Now there is 'Blue Box Art'. The frame for these was made using some discarded pieces of wood and coat hangers. The people were built up using lots of newspaper and paper mache paste (flour & water). The colour for the clothing, skin, and hair was created using little pieces of newspaper.

14. "Pinatas" by Laura Campeau and the Littles, Ages 1 - 6, Dorchester Signpost

Our recycled newspaper project was all about the process. The Signposts earliest users can't quite read it but we did almost everything else with it. Littles aged 1-6 focused on sensory and fine motor skills, with the hope of constricting a piñata at the end. The littles touched the paper, cut it in strips, explored strips with tongs, mixed it with flour and water and got messy doing paper mache on balloons. We decorated the end result with old nail polish to stick on theme and even got a functioning piñata!

15. "The Housekeeper" by Laura Durston, Dorchester Signpost

Created from the words, articles and stories produced out of the COVID pandemic sits a 5 foot tall worn out and fatigued housekeeper. Her skin was assembled from the London Weather Network Maps and convey her weathered appearance from worry and uncertainty. I made this sculpture as a tribute to all the housekeepers fighting the battle against COVID. It is made entirely out of newspaper without the help of any frame. To adhere the sculpture together I used tape and paper mache (flour and water).

17. "Mother & Daughter, Ann & Anette" by Margaret Cantelon & Shirley Wharton, Blyth Brussels Citizen

This was our first attempt at paper mache. We are residents of Nine Mile Villa in Lucknow.

18. "Canon Camera" by Mazzelyn Galbraith, Age 11, Ridgetown Independent News

This is my newspaper camera made mostly of newspapers and a bit of cardboard. The lens' base is a toilet paper roll and the rest is rolled pieces of newspaper and the texture on the lens is some toothpicks. I made my creation to look like my mom's Canon camera.

20. "Landscape Painting" by Morgan Hawthorne, Age 10 & Barbara Phair, Ridgetown Independent News

This painting started as a blank canvas. To start, four layers of paper mache were added to the canvas. Paint was added for the sky and the sunset. You can still see the title "Ridgetown Independent News" in the sunset. The trees are made of chopped up strips of newspaper, to give them a bit of definition. You can still see some of the words on the tree bark. Small pieces of newspaper were added as grass with the names of stores from the community.

21. "Couture Dress" by Olivia Bevacqua, Port Perry, The Standard Newspaper

I chose to use the newspaper to make a couture-inspired dress. I believe that art and newspapers are one and the same. They both connect communities and spread messages throughout. This is why I chose to join the two and create a fun art piece that shows my love for design and represents a community standing together.

23. "Donut" by Penny Johnston-Ladds, Age 6, Fergus Wellington Advertiser

Penny made it using recycled, squished together Wellington Advertiser's pages, secured them with a few strips of Painters tape, and then paper maché'd them using newspaper and water and flour (she switched to glue and water on the last coat). It took many layers, and she worked so hard! She finished it up with a few layers of paint, and some beads for sprinkles. The end result looks good enough to eat!

24. "Four-Shaft Newspaper Loom" by Rosamund Hyde, Tamworth, Napanee Beaver

I used recycled newspapers to create a working 4-shaft loom. Real looms are strong and can be heavy. This newspaper loom is delicate and light. The structure is based on triangles (rolled pieces of newspaper stapled at the vertices) to be rigid.
On this loom, about 70 cotton warp threads run from back to front through the reed, which is made from grass stalks and is be used to pack in the crosswise weft threads and straighten the edge of the weaving. The loom supports four smaller triangular newspaper frames with string loops to lift the warp threads and form a pattern. I used this loom to weave a short length of cloth with purple wool thread; this pattern is called “overshot”, a type that was woven by pioneers in the Napanee area 150-200 years ago (on MUCH stronger looms).
In addition to recycled newspaper, I used masking tape, staples, string, a large paper clip, and 35 dried grass stems to make this loom. The newspaper was more than 70% of the loom by weight.

I made a mask holder to hold and display masks! I worked really hard on it too! It is made from rolled up pieces of newspaper hot glued together.

Each spring we recycle newspapers to create seed pots. These wonderful tools help us recycle newspaper into functional items. The seed pods holds the soil and proves surprisingly sturdy as it contains the plant until ready for planting.

This is a 6 foot diameter paper-mache peace sign that we are in the process of weatherproofing to be able to put on the front of our new property. We have several newspaper subscriptions as they help teach us about local events.
This history of the peace sign dates to 1958. It was conceived of as a symbol in support of nuclear disarmament. Over the years, the peace sign has morphed into a more general signifier of calm. The peace sign is owned by no one, nor trademarked and has over the past 42 years become a universal and timeless symbol of harmony and gratitude.
