Consultation on the Rationalisation of Recycling Centre Opening Hours

Last year as part of the rates setting process the Council considered the closure of a number of Recycling Centres in the district as a potential budgetary saving measure. A Working Group of Council members was subsequently established to further consider the various options for the future operation of the Recycling Centres.

Following extensive discussion by the Working Group it is now proposed that, rather than closing any sites, the days/evenings of operation for all Recycling Centres would be changed in order to achieve a rationalisation of service provision across the sites as shown below:
• Only opening Tier A sites (i.e. Cookstown, Drumcoo & Magherafelt) two evenings in the summer (April to September) rather than three evenings.
• Only opening Tier B sites (i.e. Coalisland & Moneymore) one evening in the summer (April to September) rather than two evenings.
• Only opening Tier C sites (i.e. Maghera) four weekdays as well as a half day Saturday (all year round), rather than six days including all day Saturday).
• Only opening Tier D sites (i.e. Castledawson, Draperstown, Fivemiletown, Tullyvar & Ballymacombs three weekdays as well as a half day Saturday (all year round)

While the above proposal represents an overall reduction in site opening hours, a balanced approach is proposed to ensure some level of service provision is available on every weekday across particular areas as far as possible.

For example, in the Clogher Valley area, it is proposed that when the site at Fivemiletown is closed on Tuesday and Thursday, the nearest site at Tullyvar will be open, and vice versa on Monday and Wednesday.

We are currently undertaking a 12-week public consultation to seek comments on this proposal and we would like you to have your say.
