About the Workshop

Basic Information about the Workshop

The workshop is for artists living in and serving the Valley (Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties).  The training will be on Jan. 23 and 24, 2020 from 9:30-4:30 at Northampton Center for the Arts.

The workshop is being hosted by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Coordination will be provided by Assets for Artists; the presenters will be Yara Liceaga Rojas and Shey Rivera Ríos, both of whom are working artists from the Boston area.

There is no cost for participation however space is limited and an application (this online form) is required. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. Free parking is available.
What Will Be Covered? What is the Content?

The workshop will focus on three main ideas:

1. Self-Awareness: Through reflective, individual and group exercises, make an account of the intersections and privileges that are specific to the group of artists taking the workshop.

2. Community-Engagement and Collective Co-Creation: Know your community/the community you want to work with and how to work together.

3. Design Justice: Design justice rethinks design processes, and centers people who are normally excluded from and often marginalized or oppressed. Design Justice centers the voices of the people most affected by systems and design and uses collaborative, creative practices to address the deepest challenges our communities face.

The Application Process

We are seeking balance in representation and participation that best engages the diversity of our region. Decisions regarding participation will be made with the goal of creating a balanced, inclusive, and representative group of individuals.

You will not be able to save your answers and return to the application at a later time. Given this, we strongly recommend that you review the application in this pdf file and then compose your answers offline. When you are ready you can then cut and paste your answers into this application.

The deadline for submitting your application is 5:00 pm on Monday Dec. 16, 2019.

Decisions will be made by early Jan. 2020. We ask that you hold January 23 and 24, 2020 so that you will be available if selected.
What Happens After the Workshop?

Individuals who successfully complete the workshop will be eligible to apply for a non-competitive $1,000 grant to undertake a community-engaged art project.

In addition, individuals will be able to receive consulting as needed from Assets for Artists, a statewide technical assistance group for artists.
