In this toxic environment, Les Roches is an essential refuge for those who cannot find housing or accommodation in the city. It is one of those rare places where you can live without having to pay rent to a landlord or interest to a bank. While the city is becoming increasingly segregated, reserving coastal housing for the upper classes on vacation, Les Roches reminds us that the most vulnerable also have the right to a sea view. That they have the right to live with dignity and that, most certainly, they treat the coastline much better than a developer. Throughout the year, the residents of Les Roches organize collectively to secure and maintain their wind-exposed buildings: renovating roofs, converting attics, insulating rooms... They pay collective charges, in a spirit of solidarity (water, electricity, garbage collection...). Let's defend this home, the last refuge for the precarious, at a time when our cities and coasts are being devoured by the real estate market!
Les Roches Blanches is also a place of welcome for people in difficulty. Those who, due to administrative difficulties, are excluded from housing schemes, social housing, and the private housing market. Those who are judged by social institutions or who simply cannot find a place there. Those who are struggling with their mental health or struggling with substance use. For all these people, Les Roches is a place to recover, find shelter, and find a roof over their heads, but also a place to breathe and be listened to. Today, at a time when the welfare state is failing more than ever in its mission to provide shelter and assistance, and municipal services are under-resourced, it is one of those citizen initiatives that play a vital role: even the municipal social services center refers people in precarious situations to the squat. Let's defend this self-organized mutual aid space, which prioritizes the values of hospitality and mutual support!
A cultural and ecological project, free from the dictatorship of profit
Les Roches Blanches is also a place where humans and non-humans coexist: chickens, dogs, cats, goats, and sheep live side by side. It is a place where we learn that agricultural production can be carried out with respect for nature and living beings, without falling under the dictatorship of the agri-food industry. At the Douarnenez market, everyone has tasted the cheese made at Les Roches, and at a decent price! Dairy production is one of many skills practiced and passed on in this place, which also has spaces for working with wood, metal, sewing, sailmaking, cars, boats, fish... It also has equipped workshops for practicing music, dance, and performing arts in all their forms.
So many artists have come here to train and prepare for their tours before performing in Douarnenez, Brittany, France, and internationally. At a time when art is becoming less and less accessible and the status of our artists is being undermined, defending Les Roches also means defending a thriving artistic creation space!
So many people have also come here to learn and practice a trade. At a time when training and equipment are becoming unaffordable, defending Les Roches also means defending craftsmanship and the right of everyone to freely practice their work!
Finally, Les Roches is a collective space not only for it’s residents but also the larger community. Many collective projects have been born here or have passed through, inspired by the space. At a time when subsidies are disappearing, this is also what we are defending by supporting Les Roches: the autonomy of our associative projects. The
