How do YOU think values based banking can support the growth of our collective sustainable future?

All around us, we see that the current economic system is not working. We are exceeding ecological limits. Global social well-being and happiness are in question.

We are at a crossroads in history. We have an opportunity to change the direction and to get to the root issues of these challenges. And the financial system is a good place to start.

As we have seen from past performance, the current finance system is rather self-serving, short term and does not have the ‘common good’ at its heart.

However, there is hope. Around the world, the growth of ‘values based banking’ market is expanding by leaps and bounds. It is demonstrating that finance can have a positive impact – for people, planet and profit.

These are organisations all over the world such as Triodos,La Nef,GLS, BankEtica, BRAC, Vancity, Charity Bank, Ecology Building Society, Banco Fie, Centenary Bank, Abundance Generation and Community21 . These emerging players are supported by powerful networks such as Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), INAISE, Institute for Social Banking (ISB), Community Sector Banking and The Finance Innovation Lab.

Now is the time to expand this growing local and global market.

Who are we?

Inspired at the Summer School of ISB,(ISB is a broad network of social banks, academia and civil society primarily based in the EU/UK), a dozen of us got together to see how we could intervene for change.

We spotted an opportunity to influence the global narrative around finance. Our intention is to create a large scale, credible, collective response to the UN's Environment Programme's (UNEP) ‘Design of a Sustainable Financial System’ Inquiry. http://www.unep.org/inquiry The purpose of the UNEP Inquiry is to respond to “How to advance policy options that would deliver a step change in the financial system’s effectiveness in mobilising capital towards a green and inclusive economy”.

This is where you come in: We need your input into this collective response.

We have several straight forward questions. We estimate the survey will take about 10 minutes.

We will be synthesising the input from this survey (as well as dozens of interviews and workshops we will be hosting with key influencers) into a formal submission to UNEP’s Inquiry in early 2015.

Thank you for your interest in helping to shape the global narrative that ‘growing the values based banking market is an important solution in enabling a sustainable future’.

We hope to have at least 1000 people responding to this survey from around the world by December 22nd–so please do pass it on!

Thank you!

PS: We realise that sometimes survey questions can be limiting- especially for complex issues like this – so we are bearing that in mind in our synthesis.
