ACHA are currently developing a Pet Policy and we are seeking your views on the draft policy.

Requesting Permission to Keep Pets in our Properties – Tenants are required to request permission to keep pets in our properties, although they are not required to apply for permission to keep smaller pets in small numbers - these include pets such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, budgies etc.

* 3. 1Where Permission to Keep a Pet will be refused – Permission to keep pets will be refused where we are aware of a history of neglect, cruelty or irresponsible pet ownership and also where we suspect the pet is intended for commercial breeding purposes.

Conditions for Keeping a Pet– If Permission to keep a pet is granted there are a number of conditions that must be met such as the tenant must have a nominated person who can care for the pet if the tenant goes away or becomes unwell, the tenant must agree to rehome the pet and remove it from their property if the tenant should become permanently unable through disability or illness to care adequately for the pet, dogs must be microchipped and wear a collar with an ID badge.

Where Permission to Keep a Pet May be Withdrawn –The Draft Policy states that permission to keep a pet may be withdrawn under certain circumstances including: where the pets welfare has been neglected, where the pet has caused a nuisance or risk to anyone in the neighbourhood, where the pet has caused damage to the property or been allowed to foul common or garden areas without the owner clearing it up, where the tenant has engaged in commercial breeding of their pet or where we have received consistent and justifiable complaints regarding the pet.
