PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET

Dear Parents,

Thank you for considering participation in this project, which ultimately aims to improve parent-child relationships. The project is being conducted by researchers from the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland.

The way a parent interacts and responds to a child’s behaviour may be influenced by many different factors, such as their relationship patterns and irritability to sensory information. The purpose of our research is to find out more about how these factors affect the attitudes and behaviours that parents have towards child rearing. We are investigating this by inviting people to fill in a short questionnaire.

Parents are eligible to participate if your youngest child is 12 years or younger, and has no intellectual or physical disabilities.  You also need a sufficient level of English to complete the questionnaire, and be over the age of 18 years old.

If you agree to participate in this research, you will be asked to fill in one questionnaire, which will take around 15 minutes, and to return it to the researchers. Please note that, by submitting the questionnaire, you give your consent to participate in the study.

Your questionnaire will be forwarded to the researchers without your name, address, or any other identifying information. No identifying information will be included in any report on the study. All information provided will be stored in a locked cabinet and a password protected computer database, and will only be accessible to the researchers.

Your participation in this research is voluntary. You are free to refuse to participate, and doing so will not disadvantage you in any way. If you choose to participate, you may refuse to answer any question on the questionnaire, and you are free to withdraw from the study, without explanation, at any time before providing it to the researchers.

It is unlikely that any of the questions will cause you distress; however, if you do feel distressed at any time while completing it, please feel free to discuss this with the research team. Some of the questions ask about your relationships with your child and other people, as well as your feelings, so remember, if you do not wish to answer these personal questions, then please leave them blank. All three researchers are registered health professionals and are contactable on the details provided on the last page of this information sheet.

Please contact the researchers if you have any other questions or feedback regarding the questionnaire or the research project, or if you would like to obtain information about the findings.

This project has been cleared in accordance with the ethical review guidelines and processes of the University of Queensland. These guidelines are endorsed by the University’s principal human ethics committee, the Human Experimentation Ethical Review Committee and registered with the Australian Health Ethics Committee as complying with the National Statement. You are free to discuss your participation in this study with project staff listed on this document. If you would like to speak to an officer of the University not involved in the study, you may contact the Chair of the Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences through the Executive Assistant on (07) 3365 7139.

Thank you for considering participation in this project.
