The Upward Bound Program is a federally funded college access and enrichment program for high school students. To be eligible to apply for admission to UChicago Upward Bound a student must:

1. Have graduated from the 8th grade and not have completed the 10th grade.
2. Be under 19 years of age
3. Be first generation, their parents cannot have a Bachelor’s Degree;
4. Have at least a 2.5 GPA;
5. Attend Hyde Park, Hirsch, or Phillips High School or live in one of the following communities: Douglas, Greater Grand Crossing, Woodlawn or Washington Park,
6. Demonstrate the desire, dedication, and discipline to enter and graduate from college.

UChicago Upward Bound provides the following FREE year-round services to participants throughout high school up through he summer after graduation:
• Academic enrichment classes in mathematics, science, English, and languages
• Access to and support for college level dual enrollment opportunities with the City Colleges of Chicago and the University of Chicago Bridge Program,
• Academic advising
• Workshops including by not limited to career exploration, college planning, financial literacy, scholarship research, study skills, and time management.
• College visits,
• Cultural activities,
• ACT test preparation, and
• Assistance with the completion of college, scholarship, financial aid applications, and the review of award letters.

Classes and workshops are held at the Hyde Park campus of the University of Chicago.

We welcome your interest in the UChicago Upward Bound Program and will be happy to answer any questions concerning the application process. Enrollment is limited. In addition to answering each question fully and submitting this application, you must also submit the following:

8th Graders
• A copy of your final 8th grade report card,
• A copy of your NWEA results,
• A copy of your diploma, and
• A letter of acceptance from the high school you will be entering in the fall

9th & 10th Graders
• An unofficial transcript from your school and your most recent report card
• A copy of their NWEA results.
• A copy of your Explore and PLAN test results
• A copy of their high school ID (front and back)

All students must submit
• A completed OSP-CP Instructor Recommendation Form (http://osp-cp.uchicago.edu/about/upward_bound.shtml)
• A copy of your social security card
• A copy of your parent’s 1040 tax forms

You must also complete a face-to-face interview for admission into our program.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

Student
The Office of Special Programs-College Prep is an organization that has as its focus post-secondary preparation and enrichment for first generation and low income students.
• Active involvement in year-round activities and programs
• Attend all mandatory activities as designated by OSP
• Maintain A’s and B’s in all subjects and attain an unweighted 3.0 or higher GPA
• Maintain active enrollment in program activities for 3-4 years
• Participate in at least 4 extracurricular activities each year including cultural enrichment, workshops, Careers Conference,
• Be civically engaged/perform community service each academic year
• Submit all requested documents in a timely manner
• Communicate in a timely and professional manner

Parent
• Ensure that student fulfills all requirements of the program
• Attend all required meetings
• Volunteer as needed
• Monitor your student’s academic progress
• Submit all requested documents in a timely manner
• Communicate in a timely manner
