Trainer Self-Assessment Overview

Purpose of the Self-Assessment
The purpose of the trainer self-assessment is to provide CalSAC trainers with:
  • 25 comprehensive trainer competencies developed by CalSAC that represent best practices in training adults.
  • A tool by which to assess their own competence and set goals for developing skills and knowledge as a Trainer.

How to Use the Self-Assessment
CalSAC’s hope is that trainers will use this tool as an aide in developing themselves as professionals in the afterschool field. The following process has been designed to make the tool useful for trainers and the Mentors who support them.
  1. Trainers complete a self-assessment and provide a copy to their mentor.
  2. Through one-on-one meetings, trainers and Mentors review the trainer’s self-assessment, set annual goals for the trainer’s development of skills and knowledge in areas of interest to the trainer, and work together towards achieving those goals.
  3. All trainers participate in a training observation conducted by their Mentor. The observation will mirror the self-assessment and its purpose is to confirm the trainer’s abilities and readiness for certification. A trainer can update their self-assessment at any time prior to their observation.
