The Department for Transport expects councils to support a transport system that gives people more choice about how they travel, including sustainable, accessible, and affordable alternatives to the private car. Shropshire Council's emerging Local Transport Plan (LTP) sets out how transport across the county will be managed, maintained, and improved over the next decade to help achieve these aims.
The LTP brings together a range of transport strategies and plans, including parking, bus services, road safety, active travel, and network management. Together, these support economic growth, improve access to services, reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and help meet environmental objectives. A consultation on this runs until 16th November and more information can be found here:
Shropshire Local Transport Plan | Get Involved - Shropshire Council Consultation PortalParking plays an important role in this approach. Well-managed parking can help keep our historic town centres accessible, reduce unnecessary traffic and congestion, and encourage the use of alternatives such as walking, cycling, public transport and Park and Ride where these options are available. Income from parking charges also helps support transport services and infrastructure across Shropshire, including bus services, Park and Ride, and walking and cycling improvements.
To support its Transport strategy, the Council has reviewed parking charges in Shropshire and compared them with other authorities. This consultation seeks views on proposed changes to parking tariffs, tariff bands, charging days and hours, and other parking arrangements. It also includes a proposal to introduce Sunday Park and Ride services in Shrewsbury.
The proposals aim to manage demand for the most convenient parking spaces while maintaining a range of lower-cost options. Changes vary by town and location and affect both on-street parking and Council-operated car parks in Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Ellesmere, and Much Wenlock.
We want to hear your views. Whether you are a resident, business owner, visitor or someone who travels into our towns, your feedback will help inform consideration of the proposals.
