Toy Soldiers and Armchair Generals: A study into the appeal of miniature wargaming and its possible worth as an education tool.

I would like to invite you to participate in this undergraduate research project. Before you decide whether you want to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what your participation will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish.

The questionnaire you are being invited to complete focuses on commercial, tactical level wargames which use a scale model representation of the fighting units they portray. It's main focus is therefore tabletop figure/miniature wargaming, especially historical themed games, but there is also a short section on similar computer wargames.

If you play games of this kind, to whatever level of commitment, then you are an ideal candidate and your contribution would be very much appreciated. The online questionnaire should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete and is a multiple choice format, with the option to add extra comments should you wish. Your identity will remain anonymous and no personal information is requested. All data gathered will only be used as part of this study. An option has been provided to input an email address so I can send you a copy of the finished paper, but you are not obliged to do this. Email addresses taken in this way will only be used for this purpose and will be deleted from the database after the paper has been sent to you.

The study aims to identify the appeal of this gaming genre and identify if it has any possible value as an educational tool, so your contribution will add an important first-hand component to the evidence base. The questionnaire covers a range of related topics in support of this. You are free to answer whichever questions you feel able or comfortable to, and are not obliged to answer every question. You should only participate if you want to; choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. However, due to the anonymous nature of the questionnaire, once submitted it cannot be returned to you or removed from the database. Completion of the questionnaire is taken as consent for the data to be included.

Please contact me directly if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like further information.
