Tourism Scholarship Program

The Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council (NSTHRC) is proud to support initiatives that encourage individuals to pursue and enhance their professional careers within the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry. The NSTHRC offers three Tourism Scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing post secondary education in tourism. The Council also offers a scholarship for Tourism Professionals working in the Industry who are interested in pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their career.
 
You are eligible for the Tourism Scholarships below if:
»     You have graduated from High School
»     You have or will be pursuing a recognized post-secondary institute within Nova Scotia
»     Preference will be given to Tourism 11 & 12 graduates

Scholarship Offerings (2022-2023):
See below each scholarship description, applicant criteria, and required application documents to submit for each of the four Tourism Scholarships of 2022-2023.

Walter H. Johnson Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually. There are two award categories: GOLD – $1,250.00 and SILVER – $750.00. Both awards are renewable for one additional year, for $750.00 and $250.00 respectively. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.

Criteria
Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing a recognized Tourism post-secondary program.
Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.

Application Process:
·      An official school transcript and two References with contact details
·      Essay: This essay will be 300-500 words in length entitled, “Why I’ve Chosen a Career in Tourism”
NSTHRC / Hotel Association of Nova Scotia Culinary Scholarship
With the tremendous growth in the Tourism Sector, cooking professionals are in great demand. To assist in the growth of culinary talent in Nova Scotia, the Hotel Association of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council are offering a Scholarship for high school graduates interested in pursuing post secondary education within the culinary trade. This Scholarship is presented annually in the amount of $1000 and is renewable for one additional year in the amount of $500. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.

Criteria
Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing post-secondary education in a recognized culinary program.
Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.

Application Process:
·      A 500 word essay describing why the applicant has chosen to pursue a career in the culinary trade
·      Resume
·      Official school transcript
·      Two References with contact details
Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarship
To support the investment in human resource development in the Tourism Industry, NSTHRC is proud to award two scholarships for Tourism professionals seeking to upgrade their skills in their designated field.

Criteria
In order to be eligible for the Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarships, applicants must be:
·      Pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their skills or career path within the tourism industry OR
       pursuing the National emerit Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
·      Employed in the Nova Scotia tourism industry for a minimum of one year.

Application Process:
·      Letter of Introduction telling us about yourself and the professional development opportunity you are interested in
       pursuing – either emerit National Certification OR professional development (i.e. conference, training, or educational 
       program).  The letter should incorporate how the opportunity will enhance job knowledge and improve career goals.
·      A letter of support from your employer and a current resume.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed by the NSTHRC Scholarship Committee on an individual basis.
