This year International Maritime Organisation [IMO] highlights the importance of gender equality with their theme “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” which is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable development goal no.5 - gender equality. Currently no data is available on women in maritime in India and in order to promote equality, the quintessential requirement is to have access to this data. If we fail to address this in a proper way we are missing out on 50% of the potential talent. By creating a facilitative environment for women, our industry will improve working conditions for all and significantly sharpen its competitive edge.

Ms.Sanjam Sahi Gupta of Sitara Shipping Ltd, winner of Sandvik India Gender Awards 2018 (SIGA) has taken up the initiative to conduct this survey. The Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of shipping, Government of India have endorsed to this initiative. Maritime Gateway, South Asia's premier maritime business magazine got engaged for execution of this initiative.
