The DSFA is looking to pilot an educational program called The Learning Program here in Greenville. The Learning Program™ was created to bridge the gap between research and practice. Although researchers continue to discover more about how people with Down syndrome learn, their insight has been slow to filter to parents and teachers. The program focuses on parents as first-teachers for their children, bringing the fruits of research into practice. Knowledgeable parents can work more effectively with their children and give them a jump-start on education. The program also arms parents to serve as capable advocates for their children in the educational process, starting with Level 1 (K5, 1st & 2nd grades) through Level 4 (3rd to 5th grades) with a Graduate Program afterwards (Middle School).

The pilot would start at Level 1, focusing on children ages 3-8 (K-2nd Grade). The course is intended to equip parents with resources, tools, and learning practices to supplement  the traditional education/classroom.  It will meet once a month for 90 minutes. Parents will then take the learning materials home to implement with your child.

The Learning Program is a big investment for the organization. The DSFA is incurring the majority of the cost (around 70%), reducing the cost per family to only $60 for the 4 month pilot program, which will run August 2016 to November 2016. To complete the full 10 month program, a balance of $90 will be owed, resulting in a total investment of only $150 per family. Scholarships may be available.
