Nominations for the NT Human Rights Awards 2026 “The Fitzgeralds"

About the Awards
The Northern Territory Human Rights Awards, “The Fitzgeralds” celebrate notable activities in the NT or by Territorians, which advance human rights. Activities recognised by the Awards include:
  • Promoting human rights and peace through education, sports or other practical activities and/or advocacy
  • Promoting equal opportunity and non-discriminatory attitudes and practices
  • Increasing community understanding of human rights for the promotion of greater respect, diversity, inclusion and harmony
  • Challenging human rights barriers and/or breaches
Award categories
Individuals or organisations may be nominated in more than one category. The four categories are:
  • Youth Award - for the promotion, protection and fulfilment of human rights of children and/or young people.
  • Justice Award - recognising significant contributions to the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights in law and justice by individuals or organisations in the NT.
  • Social Change Award - honouring those driving meaningful social change for human rights and equal opportunity in the NT.
  • Diversity Award - celebrating efforts to advance human rights and inclusion for diverse communities across the NT.
Considerations
The Judging panel will consider:
  • Impact: The extent to which the work or activity has increased knowledge, understanding, and respect for human rights, including equal opportunity and non-discriminatory attitudes and practices.
  • Contribution to Change: The role the nominee has played in removing barriers or challenging breaches of human rights.
  • Initiative and Innovation: Creative or original approaches used in the design or delivery of the work or activity.
  • Commitment: The amount of time, effort, and resources devoted to the activity or cause.
  • Promotion of Human Rights and Peace: Engagement in education, sport, advocacy, or other practical initiatives that advance human rights and peace.
  • Advancement of Equal Opportunity: Efforts to foster non-discriminatory attitudes and practices.
  • Community Engagement: Activities that help increase community understanding of human rights, promoting respect, diversity, inclusion, and harmony.
  • Challenge to Injustice: Actions that confront and challenge human rights barriers or breaches.
Referees
As part of your nomination, you are required to provide the details of at least one referee who can support your nomination and speak to the nominee's work, contribution and impact.

You may also provide the details of a second referee. While a second referee is optional, including one may help strengthen your nomination by providing additional information about the nominee's contribution.

Please ensure that your referee/s are familiar with the nominee's work or activities and are able to provide relevant information in support of the nomination.
Supporting documents
You may choose to include supporting documents at the time of nomination. While not required, that if you are including supporting documents, it is strongly recommended that you upload these when submitting the nomination - this helps streamline the assessment process due to the high volume of nominations we receive.

If you are unable to upload the documents at the time of nomination, you may email them to nthra.secretariat@gmail.com. The email must include the nominee's full name and the award category they are being nominated for.

Nominations close on 16 October 2026 - please note that this date will not be extended.
