GIMLEARN EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD (EAB)

GIMLearn is SGIM’s learning portal and designed to delivery educational content and professional development to GIM professionals. GIMLearn offers quality and timely content on subjects that matter most to you; many of which include CME and MOC credits. Click HERE to view GIMLearn.

We are looking for volunteers to join the GIMLearn Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) which serves as the governing board for GIMLearn. There are two teams within the EAB for which we are looking for volunteers: CME/MOC Team or Content Review Team (information below on each team).

The GIMLearn Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) is looking for volunteers to serve 1, 2, or 3 year term(s).

The CME/MOC Team is responsible for reviewing ALL SGIM activities/content requesting CME/MOC credit, now that SGIM is an ACCME direct accredited provider. This includes reviewing CME MOC applications for regional or annual meetings, webinars, mini-courses, or other GIMLearn enduring material content. Their charge is to ensure that SGIM’s activities meet ACCME accreditation guidelines. Members of this team will regularly review and approve activities, and determine the amount of credit hours granted. Accreditation information and training will be provided.

• 3+ years out of training
• Experience as a Medical Educator
• Must complete a COI form each year

The Content Review Team will be reviewing content submitted for consideration in GIMLearn and addressing questions and issues that arise related to GIMLearn content, such as guidelines, rubrics, and sunsetting. We anticipate the next submission process in 2025.

ACADEMIC HOSPITALIST COMMISSION:

The Academic Hospitalist Commission (AHC) is the professional home for academic physicians dedicated to the care of hospitalized patients. We promote scholarly activity and career development in education, research, patient care, and leadership.

Commission members must be members of SGIM and should be prepared to commit at least 2 hours each month to working with the commission. Ideal candidates will have a record of professional contributions to hospital medicine, such as leadership or participation in educational, research, clinical operations, or quality improvement activities.

CLINICAL PRACTICE COMMITTEE:

The Clinical Practice Committee (CPC) consists of General Internal Medicine experts in clinical practice whose mission is to generate and inspire practice innovation and transformation. The CPC works to identify and disseminate best evidence and methods for practice design, quality and patient safety, to enhance joy in practice, and to improve the value and experience of care for both patients and providers.

The CPC is a working committee, producing deliverables for members and the SGIM community at large to support innovation and knowledge in clinical practice. CPC also promotes and advocates for sustainable and satisfying careers for SGIM members. In addition to general CPC membership, the CPC has 3 subcommittees or areas of focus: Quality and Patient Safety, Practice Redesign, and Evidence-Based Medicine. If selected to join the general membership in the CPC, you may also opt to participate in one of these subcommittees or areas of focus.

Expectations:
• Committee terms are three years, with an opportunity for extension through reapplication or at the invitation of the Committee Chairs.
• Members are expected to align with one of CPC’s yearly topics of interest AND actively contribute to at least one work product a year (e.g. submitted workshops, symposia, SGIM Forum articles, toolkits, position statements, white papers).
• Time commitment of approximately 2-4 hours per month devoted to committee work.

CLINICAL PRACTICE COMMITTEE - EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE SUBCOMMITTEE:

Please Note: You DO NOT have to also apply for the Clinical Practice Committee. If you are selected to a EBM Subcommittee Member, you will automatically be a Clinical Practice Committee Member as EBM is a Subcommittee of the Clinical Practice Committee if selected.

Clinical Practice Committee- Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) Subcommittee aims to promote evidence-based medicine (EBM) in teaching and clinical practice. Our membership consists of SGIM members who are medical students and physicians, including physicians-in-training. Our activities include writing EBM Bottom Line Summaries of important medical advances which are peer-reviewed, published in JGIM, and indexed in PubMed, developing EBM-related teaching materials and curricula, creating EBM-based workshops for the SGIM Annual Meeting, and mentoring students and junior faculty. We meet for an hour once a month via teleconference (2nd Friday of every month at 12pm ET), and we have our annual retreat at the SGIM Annual Meeting. If you share our interest in evidence-based medicine, we invite you to join us.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE:

The Education Committee is seeking applications for full and associate members. The purpose of the Education Committee is to identify and respond to the needs of clinician-educators at all levels of their careers by:

• Improving forums for clinician educators to present their work
• Stimulating young educators by recognizing their work and promoting them within SGIM
• Maintaining senior educators' involvement in the Society
• Supporting mentorship and annual meeting programming
• Informing members about educational scholarship opportunities
• Responding to educational policy statements on behalf of the Society
• Partnering with the educational arms of other national professional medical organizations
• Supporting the development of excellence in teaching, curriculum development and evaluation
• Promoting educational research methods
• Collaborating with the other Core Committees, Regions, Commissions, and Interest Groups

Criteria:
Selected members are highly encouraged to attend the Education Committee meeting at the 2024 SGIM Annual Meeting. In addition, they should be available to participate in committee conference calls held on the first Wednesday of every month from 12-1 PM EST. The Education Committee is an active, working committee with several subcommittees and working groups. Members are expected to contribute their time and effort to work on these subcommittees and workgroups.

ETHICS COMMITTEE:

The Ethics Committee supports the mission of SGIM by promoting the ethical practice of general internal medicine, addressing ethical issues in clinical practice, research, and health policy, and relieving moral distress caused by conflicts about such issues. It does so through various means including collaborating with other SGIM groups around the ethical implications of their work, advising SGIM leaders and members around ethical issues and the management of conflicts of interest, and engaging in scholarly work around ethics within and beyond the SGIM community.

Criteria:
Candidates must be a member of SGIM and demonstrate a strong commitment to service at SGIM or are willing to commit to doing so. We are seeking candidates who have a history of engagement in ethics (e.g., clinical ethics committee, ethics research). We are seeking candidates who “study ethics” ( e.g. residents/ students/ clinicians who may not have done research or served on ethics committees but may have taken special courses / studied ethics as a minor. We encourage associate members to apply who have an interest in ethics and some experience on examining ethical issues. Candidates should be available to join (most of) the monthly calls on the 3rd Friday of the month at 11 am EST.

GERIATRICS COMMISSION:

You don’t have to be a geriatrician to join the Geriatrics Commission.

The Geriatrics Commission is dedicated to promoting further research, clinical and educational in geriatrics issues, especially as they pertain to the generalist. We aim to collaborate with other commissions and committees within SGIM and other societies to promote excellent care across the lifespan, with emphasis on geriatric syndromes, transitions of care, and alternative methods of care delivery (home visits, nursing home care, etc). During the year, we meet regularly (2nd Friday of every month at 12pm ET) and collaborate to provide educational workshops in regional and annual meetings and have been successful in providing SGIM with an Update in Geriatrics annually. All applicants must be a SGIM member to be considered.

HEALTH EQUITY COMMISSION:

The Health Equity Commission's (HEC) purpose is to serve as the chief advocate for SGIM's health equity-related interests in education, research, and provision of clinical care as the Society strives to achieve better health for all. We work collaboratively to dismantle structural inequities, optimize clinical care, and promote social justice, especially for historically marginalized populations through education, advocacy, research, and scholarship.

Criteria:
• Must be an SGIM member.
• Must demonstrate a strong commitment to one or more of the following: service, education, scholarship, advocacy and/or research in the area of disparities, structural inequities, and/or health equity.
• Recognize care and promotion of social justice for vulnerable and marginalized populations as a core value.

Recommended participation:
• Attend at least 1 call during the year (Calls take place the 4th Monday of every month at 3pm ET) AND
• Be on a working group for one of the yearly HEC priorities,
• Be on a working group for a HEC-led symposium or workshop,
• Judge abstracts at the conference,
• Act as Award Committee member/reviewer,
• Start a HEC-led position statement,
• Join another committee's position statement as a HEC liaison, or
• Mentor a colleague in HEC
If you cannot make the monthly calls, we recommend participation in at least two of the activities listed above.

HEALTH POLICY COMMITTEE:

The Health Policy Committee (HPC) leads and oversees policy and advocacy activities for SGIM. The HPC prioritizes policies that advance SGIM’s mission and goals in education, clinical practice, and research. The HPC leads and coordinates SGIM’s direct advocacy activities in conjunction with SGIM leadership and other societies when appropriate. The Committee also supports activities initiated by our members with a particular focus on identifying and developing opportunities for advocacy by early career SGIM members. Learn more about our issues, outlined in the annual advocacy agenda, developed by the HPC and approved by SGIM Council.

The committee functions through three subcommittees (Research, Education, and Clinical Practice) that focus on SGIM priorities within our advocacy agenda. All three subcommittees would welcome new members.

We are looking for SGIM members who have an interest in policy related to education, research, clinical practice or other topics outlined within the advocacy agenda. We welcome members at all levels of seniority.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE:

The Membership Committee seeks to recruit both full and associate members for a 3-year term.

The Membership Committee identifies and measures members' needs, priorities, satisfaction with the Society, and viewpoints, and works with other leaders to develop and implement plans; accordingly, collaborates with Council and other workgroups to devise strategies for attracting and retaining members.

Committee members are asked to participate in all membership-related initiatives, including recruitment and retention efforts. Attendance on monthly committee calls, reviewing scholarship applications for trainee engagement programs, monthly membership outreach based on target audiences and communication via GIM Connect/e-mail is a high priority.

The Research Committee identifies and responds to the needs of investigators at all levels of their careers. The Research Committee’s mission is to foster the career development of generalist researchers throughout mentorship, recognition of excellence, networking, and skills development. Successful and productive generalist researchers are essential for ensuring the highest quality of care and better health for all. The Research Committee includes clinicians and non-clinicians. Below is our list of criteria for membership.

• A strong commitment to service to SGIM is preferred

WOMEN AND MEDICINE COMMISSION:

The Women and Medicine Commission (WAMC) strives to improve the health of women and to advance the academic careers of women in medicine. Our four-part mission is to:

• Promote women’s health as a generalist issue in clinical practice, research, and health policy;
• Facilitate communication among SGIM’s interest groups related to women’s and gender-based health and advancement of women faculty;
• Advance gender equity among medical faculty through programming and support for the career development of female physicians and all physicians pursuing careers in women’s health; and
• Represent the organization’s commitment to promote women’s health research, women’s access to equitable clinical care, and gender equity and freedom from harassment in the workplace through collaborations and activities within and outside of SGIM.

Criteria:
Volunteers must be a SGIM Member. WAMC members are expected to attend at least 75% of our monthly meetings which are held the first Friday of each month at 2:30 pm Eastern. We seek new members who are interested in advancing one of our four priorities.

UPTODATE:

UpToDate is an evidence-based, peer-reviewed clinical information resource that synthesizes literature, offers the latest evidence, and provides specific recommendations for patient care.

As an SGIM-UpToDate Peer Reviewer, you will help ensure the content is relevant and beneficial for clinicians at the point of care. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of medical education and patient care delivery.

Reviewer Responsibilities:
1. Peer Reviewer Training: Reviewers participate in an annual 45-minute online training session led by SGIM-UpToDate physician Co-Chairs and the UpToDate General Internal Medicine Physician Editor team. This session covers the UpToDate editorial process, best practices in medical writing and feedback, and the integration of evidence-based medicine. It also includes networking opportunities with other reviewers.

2. SGIM-UpToDate Peer Reviews: After completing training, reviewers select topics of interest and are assigned up to four reviews annually. Feedback is submitted through an online form. While reviewers can specify areas of interest, they may be asked to review topics outside their initial preferences. The reviews focus on evaluating the educational materials for their clarity, accuracy, and relevance to clinical practice.

3. Honoraria and Benefits: In recognition of your efforts, SGIM-UpToDate Peer Reviewers receive:
• A complimentary individual subscription to UpToDate.
• An annual honorarium of $500.
• A certification of participation for professional portfolios.

4. Term of Service: The reviewer term lasts for up to three years, with annual renewal based on performance and engagement.

Eligibility Criteria: Eligible candidates should be practicing clinicians. SGIM seeks the perspectives of primary care physicians, especially those with active part-time or full-time ambulatory general internal medicine practices. Reviewers are tasked with evaluating content designed to provide unbiased, trusted medical information from the general internal medicine perspective. Participation in this process offers valuable opportunities for faculty development and career advancement.

SGIM FORUM ASSOCIATE EDITOR:

The SGIM Forum is actively recruiting SGIM members to serve on the SGIM Forum Editorial team as an Associate Editor. SGIM Forum Associate Editors’ responsibilities may vary during their term, but generally include the following at some time during their tenure:

• Must be a SGIM Member
• Contribute original work to SGIM Forum
• Serve as an ambassador or “talent scout” to encourage and recruit SGIM members to submit (articles or artwork) to SGIM Forum
• Facilitate members’ submissions, as well as field general questions about the scope, content, and aims of SGIM Forum
• May be occasionally asked to review/edit submitted articles to facilitate production
• Participate actively in monthly AE meetings.
- While schedule conflicts arise and it can be difficult to accommodate all AE schedules for meetings, if you are not able to attend group meetings, you keep in regular contact with other AEs as your proxy and/or directly in contact with the Editor-in-Chief through other communications to fulfill your AE responsibilities.
• Lead or support the development of SGIM Forum activities, including but not limited to writing portfolio development, mentored writing, virtual or on-site workshops at regional and national meetings for members, etc.
• If not leading or supporting, then promoting and marketing such activities (e.g. through social media, local member listservs, etc) are expected.

ACLGIM LEAD PROGRAM FACULTY

ACLGIM is seeking one LEAD Program faculty member for a three year term.

LEAD Program faculty would be integral members of the team leading various aspects of the LEAD Program (e.g., alumni connection, leadership development content, coach recruitment and matching, program evaluation, etc.) depending on individual interest. In addition, LEAD Program faculty are involved with continuous quality improvement to increase engagement and efficacy.

Roles and responsibilities may include:
• Developing leadership curriculum for synchronous and asynchronous learning
• Participating in monthly conference calls with LEAD faculty
• Reviewing candidates for program selection
• Connecting participants with coaches
• Developing and leading orientation session at SGIM Annual Meeting
• Selection of speakers for annual meeting workshops

Preferred faculty qualifications:
• Prior participation in the LEAD program or other leadership development programs

ACLGIM UNLTD PROGRAM CO-CHAIRS

ACLGIM is seeking two new UNLTD Program Co-Chairs to join its leadership. One position will be for a three-year term while the second position will serve four years.

Recognizing that academic leaders are expected to navigate complex structures and systems; the Unified Leadership Training for Diversity (UNLTD) Program aims to equip current and aspiring academic leaders with the essential skills to thrive and drive diversity in academic organizations.

The role encompasses:
• Serve as an ex-officio member of the ACLGIM Executive Committee, providing updates on the status and efforts of the UNLTD program. Duties include attending regular Executive Committee phone calls and in-person meetings (prior to SGIM Annual Meeting and after the ACLGIM Winter Summit) when necessary. Attendance at in-person meetings is not required but encouraged.
• Assist in the outreach and promotion of the UNLTD program.
• Lead the selection of UNLTD awardees and assist in the matching of UNLTD awardees with mentors.
• Lead quarterly group calls with UNLTD awardees.
• Check-in with awardees about their program experience and progress.

Preferred qualifications:
• Prior participation in UNLTD (not required, but preferred)
• Experience with leadership development training

CAREER ADVISING PROGRAM (CAP) CO-CHAIR

The Women and Medicine Commission’s Career Advising Program (CAP) is seeking one person to join the leadership team as Chair-Elect for a three-year term. The first year as CAP Chair Elect. The following year, the Chair Elect transitions into the role of CAP Chair. Finally, some Chairs continue to serve as a member of the CAP leadership team for a third year as the CAP Past-Chair.

CAP is a two-year sponsorship initiative designed to empower junior to mid-career faculty by equipping them with the tools, resources, and guidance necessary to excel in the academic promotion process. Please review our website to find out more about CAP by clicking HERE

Roles and responsibilities of the Chair-Elect include:
• Attendance at regular CAP conference calls, up to twice a month when busy. Timing of conference calls will consider your schedule when possible but will include members across multiple time zones and sometimes outside of normal work hours.

• The chair-elect would work with the rest of the team to pair sponsors and sponsees based on common interests once a year
and follow-up on matches as needed.
