At the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue (NCPD) we strive to create an environment where everyone feels included, participates equally and where it feels safe to share one’s opinions and perspectives. In order to achieve this, the following ethical guidelines has been developed and states expectations to all course participants.

1. Be inclusive
Staff and participants at NCPD welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. We will seek to respect all persons equally and make no distinction based on identity. This includes but is not limited to members of any sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, tribe, culture, national origin, social and economic class, educational level, colour, race, immigration status, sex, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability. We are committed to providing a work environment free of discrimination and unlawful harassment. Actions, words, jokes, or comments based on an individual’s sex, race, ethnicity, age, religion, or any other legally protected characteristic are not tolerated.

2. Be respectful
We will not all agree all the time, and this is a good thing – this is how we learn and broaden our horizon. However, disagreement is no excuse for disrespectful behaviour and personal attacks. An environment where people feel threatened or harassed is not conducive to open and honest dialogues and exchanges of perspectives.  Personal attacks toward participants or staff cannot be tolerated and harassment, physical, psychological or sexual, is not acceptable. This includes but is not limited to: Threats of violence. Discriminatory jokes and language. Sharing sexually explicit or violent material via electronic devices or other means.

Personal insults. Unwelcome sexual attention. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour.

In general, if someone asks you to stop unwanted behaviour, then stop. When disagreeing, try to understand why and when expressing ideas and views, talk on behalf of yourself.

3. Find strength in diversity

Different people have different perspectives on issues, and this is valuable for solving problems, generating new ideas or broadening understanding. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint does not mean that they are wrong. Instead of judging or insulting, focus on trying to understand where the person is coming from and what has shaped the views expressed.

The NCPD Ethical Guidelines is a binding document: If you fail to adhere to any of the provisions set out in this document, you can be dismissed from participation. All reports and concerns will be properly considered and treated with discretion.
