Water Act Changes

Livestock Water Use Reporting – Producer Input Survey

Background

The Government of Alberta has made changes to the Water Act which now require mandatory reporting. However, there is consultation that will be occurring in the next few months on this issue and ILWG is proposing asking for an exemption on reporting for water licenses that fall under a certain volume as they will not have a significant impact on water availability and use.

This survey is focused on helping ILWG understand what an appropriate water license volume is based off of use in the Confined Feeding Operation sector.

Livestock operations vary widely in scale, water use intensity, and management systems. Establishing an appropriate threshold is critical to ensure that any reporting requirements:

Are proportionate to risk and impact
Do not create unnecessary administrative burden
Reflect real-world operational conditions across Alberta
Your input will help inform industry feedback and ensure that proposed policies are grounded in practical, on-farm realities.
1.What best describes your operation?
2.What is the best estimate of your operation's annual water use
3.At what annual water use level (cubic metres per year) do you believe mandatory reporting should begin?
4.What factors influenced your choice of threshold? (select all that apply)
