About the project

We are seeking participants for an exciting opportunity through the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) to develop and complete Professional Growth Plans (PGPs) aligned with your learning and your work around being a teacher of refugee students and with a particular focus on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Learn more below.

Overview:

The Center for Learning in Practice at the Carey Institute for Global Good is pleased to have received funding through WA's PESB to support you, WA state teachers of refugees, in your work with refugee students and families. Aligned with the Refugee Educator Foundations of Practice (REFP) course, you will create a PGP that pushes your learning and work forward. You will have the opportunity to work on any professional growth initiative you have in mind that supports your professional learning as a refugee educator and that is focused in the domain of social and emotional learning (SEL). 
 
Only twenty participants will be selected for this specialized SEL PGP professional learning community. Participants who completed the REFP course as a member of cohorts 1-3 will be given priority, but all interested educators working with students of refugee backgrounds are invited to apply.

Timeframe for the PGP coaching project:

September 4 -   
September 26, 2020
Recruit participants and form our PLC
October 17, 2020 PGP PLC Virtual Kick-Off Meeting with all participants and facilitators on Zoom (you must be able to attend)
October - December 2020 Drafting of PGP plans
December 5, 2020 PGP PLC Gathering on Zoom to finalize PGPs (you must be able to attend)
December 2020 -  March 2021 Implementation of PGP plans 
March 6, 2021 PGP PLC Gathering (virtual) - Sharing of evidence, to-date, and refine plans (you must be able to attend)
March - April 2021 Revise and finalize PGPs for submission
April 10, 2021 PGP PLC Showcase (virtual) - Participants share their work with each other (you must be able to attend)

Required qualifications:
  • educator working with refugee students in Washington's pK-12 schools interested in professional growth in the domain of social and emotional learning
  • desire to implement ideas gathered from the REFP course and/or to further your knowledge and skills as related to working effectively with refugee students and families
  • ability to attend mandatory (virtual) PLC meetings
Preferred characteristics: 
  • completed the REFP course as a member of cohort 1, 2, or 3
  • interest in earning micro-credentials and/or building an e-portfolio to highlight and share your competencies and expertise
  • desire to work in collaboration and dialog with colleagues and to contribute actively to a PLC
Benefits of participating:
  • 25 clock hours for completing a PGP
  • coaching and a community support for your work with refugee students and families
  • $450 stipend (to be invoiced & paid upon successful completion of PGP in April, 2021)
