We all know that underground infrastructure delivers heat, gas, oil, electricity, water, phones and internet to our homes and offices. Every year, however, thousands of buried wires, cables, pipelines, water mains, and sewer lines are damaged in Canada by excavation activities. When damages occur, the result is almost always an interruption in service but, at worst, it can lead to injury, death and/or environmental contamination. It can also harm your businesses’ reputation and hit you hard in the wallet due to the costs of repairs and fines.

Have you heard about the Canadian Common Ground Alliance (CCGA) Damage Prevention Symposium? It’s an important annual event to learn the latest information you need to know when working near underground infrastructure. Nova Scotia is thrilled that the CCGA is hosting this year’s Damage Prevention Symposium at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel from November 4 to 6, 2025.

Attendees come from many different stakeholder groups, including excavating contractors, municipalities, owners of oil, gas telecommunications, electrical transmission/distribution, water and sewer, emergency managers, surveyors, trenchless industries, One Call Center members, utility locate service providers, engineers, insurance companies, risk managers, regulators and others dedicated to safeguarding the underground infrastructure.

Preventing damage is a shared responsibility among all of us, so this year we want to see more excavators and contractors attend the symposium and join our discussions. We know you have a lot to say. We also know that the biggest barrier for local contractors or excavators is the cost of the conference - small business owners may be able to make the time but not necessarily have the extra money to attend.

This year, we’ve created a DIGSAFE Fund where folks like yourselves can apply to attend. We’re running a campaign for donations right now that could benefit you, so the fund can send a few local excavator/contractors or a nonprofit affiliate to the symposium.

Apply today to be considered for an invitation to the symposium!
(Note: An application is not guaranteed -- a selection committee will review the applications and only those selected will be contacted if funding is granted).
