Question Title

* 1. To protect the public interest, oral health profession Colleges set a minimum level of continuing education and practice hours that a dental professional under their jurisdiction must complete.

Dentists in Alberta are required to complete a minimum of 60 credit hours within a 2 year period.

Registered Dental Hygienists in Alberta are required to complete a minimum of 45 credit hours and 600 practice hours within a 3 year period.

Registered Dental Technicians in Alberta are required to complete a minimum of 60 credit hours over a 5 year period.

Denturists in Alberta are required to complete a minimum of 10 continuing education hours per year for annual re-licensing and a minimum of 100 hours in a 5 year cycle period for competency.

Registered Dental Assistants in Alberta are required to complete a minimum of 2 Learning Objectives per year and 300 practice (including volunteer) hours within a 3 year period.

Do you believe that completion of a minimum of 2 learning objectives per year (regardless of the time required to complete them) is sufficient to reflect the professional status of an RDA?

Question Title

* 2. Prior to 2006, RDAs in Alberta were required to complete a minimum of 10 credit hours of professional development per year for renewal of their certification.

Do you believe that a return to the requirement of credit hours instead of learning objectives would enhance public confidence in the dental assistant profession?

Question Title

* 3. Professional Associations fulfill many functions and provide a variety of benefits, services and supports to their members. One of these is providing relevant professional development opportunities to members at cost recovery or no fee (and to non-members at a much higher fee that is more than the member fee and annual membership fee combined). This professional development is in compliance with and links to our provincial competency profile for RDAs. It must answer the question: How does this information or skill impact and enhance the practice of the RDA?

Through the Dental Assistant associations in Alberta, professional development is delivered in a variety of ways.  Many of these offerings incorporate the opportunity to meet face to face for networking, socializing and learning through volunteering.

Question Title

* 4. Professional development offered by organizations, businesses and others that are not focused exclusively on the competency or enhancement of practice for RDAs are often available and accessible. These may not offer the opportunity for the RDA to broaden professional horizons and expand their knowledge beyond their current employment niche.  These may also offer a biased presentation when there is a financial benefit to the presenter or their company.

* 5. Who pays for your professional development? (Check all that apply)

Question Title
