Study Title: An Examination of Anger and Empathy

I am a student at The Chicago School. This study is being conducted as a part of my dissertation requirement for the Clinical PsyD program.

I am asking you to participate in a research study about the relationship between anger and empathy. You will be asked to complete three online surveys about your demographic information, anger expression, and empathy levels. This will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete the whole process. This may cause loss of confidentiality, emotional distress or upset, and contain reading materials or questions that may be regarded as sensitive or invasive. Although you may not benefit, it will help to understand how empathy can benefit anger management treatment programs.

Please take your time to read the entire document and feel free to ask any questions before agreeing to participate.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between empathy and anger. Exploring this is important because of the ramifications of untreated anger, seen in the functional impairments in people's physical health, mental health, relationships, and work life. Understanding how empathy relates to anger may provide a new approach to mitigating the consequences of anger.

Procedures: You will be asked to complete a demographic questionnaire and two digital surveys available on SurveyMonkey which will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey can only be conducted once. Upon completion of the survey, you will receive a digital debriefing statement with my contact information. This debriefing statement will be included as the final portion of the online survey at SurveyMonkey and will contain mental health resources.

Compensation: One participant will win a virtual $25 Amazon gift card by entering a raffle. You may enter the raffle by voluntarily providing your email address at the end of the surveys. The email addresses will be disposed of and any directly identifiable information will be stored separately.

Risks to Participants: The risks of study participation is loss of confidentiality, emotional distress or upset, and reading materials or questions regarded as sensitive or invasive. The risk to confidentiality will be minimized by storing all data on a password protected computer and using an encrypted flash drive as back up storage. To minimize emotional distress or upset, mental health resources will be provided, such as calling the national 988 hotline for crises or suicidal ideations. Alternatively, the national NAMI helpline at 1-800-950-6264 may be called for both crises and non-crises when you would just like to speak to a trained supportive counselor. Finally, the risk of reading sensitive material will be minimized by providing the option to withdraw from the study at any time should the questions become too invasive.

Benefits to Participants: You will not personally benefit from this study. The hope is that the information learned from this study may benefit society in our understanding of how building empathy may be used to influence anger.

Alternatives to Participation: Participation in this study is voluntary. You may withdraw from study participation at any time without any penalty.

Confidentiality: During this study, information will be collected about you for the purpose of this research. This includes your email address, age, race/ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship status, how many years you have lived in the United States, state of residence, employment status, annual household income, language spoken, diagnosed mental health conditions, education level, and your relationship status.

Data will be stored on a password-protected computer which will also be backed up on an encrypted flash drive. IP addresses will not be collected. Research materials will be kept for a minimum of five years after publication per American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. Only my Dissertation Chair and I will have access to the data. All data will be deleted from SurveyMonkey immediately after it is transferred out.

It is possible that your data may be used for future research or distributed to another researcher without your consent. However, information that could identify you will be removed

Your research records may be reviewed by federal agencies whose responsibility is to protect human subjects participating in research, including the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) and by representatives from The Chicago School Institutional Review Board, a committee that oversees research.
