To suppliers of oil seed product for the Australian market,
In 2008 Peerless and Goodman Fielder joined Unilever in adopting policies to exclude ingredients derived from genetic engineering (GE) for their own brand products. Coles, Aldi, and IGA did the same. The majority of the Australian food industry now has a non-GE policy, and Greenpeace are poised to work with those remaining companies that are yet to adopt non-GE policies for food manufacturing.
In 2008 global cottonseed output fell sharply due to poorer harvests in the United States, Brazil, India, Australia and China. No recovery is forecast. (USDA oil crops outlook) In 2009 in Australia, Monsanto pulled out of the Deltapine GE cotton. The failures of genetic engineering to deliver its promises, and the broad scale consumer rejection of GE-derived ingredients in food are making significant impacts on the markets for non-GE ingredients.
This year Greenpeace Australia Pacific will launch a listing of suppliers of non-GE derived oils for the Australian food industry. The report will provide a valuable reference for the Australian and international food industries on sourcing non-GE food grade oils.
We plan to list suppliers who can supply specific non-GE oil products. For this purpose we are not enquiring about your whole supply chain or range but simply about individual products that you can supply that are non-GE.
Please complete our easy oils survey by Friday 11th September.
The listing will be circulated widely to our extensive database of Australian and international food companies. It will be available online at our popular website www.truefood.org.au in a new industry web page to be launched in October this year.
The list of non-GE oil suppliers will also be shared with our colleagues at the Non-GMO Sourcebook and Greenpeace International offices for sharing with companies worldwide.
The oils listing represents an excellent opportunity to showcase your non-GE products amongst a worldwide food industry audience. As always we will ensure our work is widely publicised in appropriate media, in this case food industry media.
Thankyou for completing the survey by Friday September 4, 2009. I look forward to working with you and to promoting your non-GE products.
Please be in touch if you have any questions. We also welcome any suggestions about how we can best work with your industry.
