Hello and thank you for taking time to consider this opportunity to assist me as I gather important information on holistic nurses.

You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a member of The American Holistic Nurses’ Association [AHNA] and the purpose of this research study is to explore holistic nurses’ genetic/genomic knowledge base and explore the level of genetic/genomic integration in their nursing practice.  As genetics/genomics [G/G] is now a competency for the 21st century nurse, holistic nurses must be prepared to integrate this content comfortably into their healing-caring process.  To that end, an assessment of what holistic nurses’ knowledge is about G/G and their comfort and confidence to integrate G/G into their practice are vital for holistic nursing to remain at the forefront of healthcare.  The ethical, social, and legal obligation requires nurses, including holistic nurses, to be fully informed and able to participate in the genetic era.

If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey via Survey Monkey. Your participation in this research study is expected to last for a total of 15-20 minutes. You have the option of skipping any questions.

There are no risks or discomforts with completing the survey.  You will not directly benefit from your participation in this research study. However, participating in the study may increase general understanding of holistic nurses’ genetics/genomics knowledge and as such, improve their participation in the healing-caring process with patients.  You will not receive any payment for participating in this research study. Participation in this study will incur no costs to you.

The researcher will protect your confidentiality by not utilizing any personal identifiers that can be linked to this data. The demographic data about the holistic nurse will be collected, including age, gender, highest degree obtained, type of holistic nursing certification, number of years teaching experience, current area of practice and their sources of genetic/genomic knowledge.  No one will know if you participated in this study.  Your name or other identifying information will not be used in the reporting of this data.  Your anonymity and confidentiality will be maintained.  Only aggregate data will be reported in any reports or publications derived from this study.  All identifying information about you and others who participated will be omitted.

Your participation in this research study is entirely voluntary. You can decide to withdraw your consent and stop participating in the research at any time, without any penalty. You may refuse to answer any questions that you do not want to answer and still remain in the study. Participants’ willingness to participate in this research study, or withdrawing from study, will not affect your membership to AHNA.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the research, you can talk to Dr. Leighsa Sharoff, EdD, RN, NPP, AHN-BC at 917.842.7902; lsharoff@hunter.cuny.edu. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, or you have comments or concerns that you would like to discuss with someone other than the researcher, please call the CUNY Research Compliance Administrator at 646-664-8918 or email HRPP@cuny.edu.

By continuing to the survey, you are giving your consent to participate.
