Survey Objective
- The ESD boundary committee is asking for community input on a scenario developed by the District’s Boundary Review Committee that models the reconfiguration of moving 6th grade to middle schools beginning in the fall of 2028, due to the completed construction of the new Salish Middle School, and to create more balanced enrollment at elementary schools.
- The committee will use this input to make additional adjustments to this scenario when they meet in June and September.
ParametersAs a result of 6th grade moving to middle schools in the fall of 2028, current elementary school boundaries must be adjusted to ensure that all elementary schools are utilized equitably according to district policy. Likewise, the Salish Middle School boundary must be created and boundaries for existing middle schools must be adjusted to ensure equitable utilization at all middle schools as this grade reconfiguration is implemented in the fall of 2028.
Guiding PrinciplesWhen considering boundary revisions the committee will consider, to the extent possible, the following guiding principles:
- Take a District-wide perspective by considering individual school capacities and student population projections to balance enrollment and alleviate overcrowding and underutilization of schools across the school district.
- Take a District-wide perspective considering growth trends and enrollment projections
- Make efforts to keep neighborhoods and communities together
- Maximize proximity to home/safe walking routes (e.g., not having to cross busy streets, railroad tracks, and consider natural boundaries)
- Consider transportation impacts, and work towards limiting the amount of time required on a bus
Consensus Scenario #2Using the below link to the district’s boundary webpage, you will be able access links to both elementary and middle school consensus #2 scenario maps and accompanying statistics about the number of students expected to be attending each school over the next 10 years, as well as expected school utilization percentages. This page also has links to a recently completed district forecast of student attendance over the next 10 years.
