The City of Merced is facing a General Fund budget shortfall next year in excess of $5 million. Even with an additional source of revenue, some City services will have to be cut. We are asking you for help in giving us your priorities.

The General Fund is the budget category that can be used by the City Council for any purpose. Approximately 75 percent of the General Fund is spent on police and fire services. Much of the City’s budget is locked in and the funds cannot be shifted to other uses by law. For example, money collected from refuse customers can’t be spent to provide fire services, or federal money given to repave a road can’t be used to maintain a park. General Fund dollars don’t have those constraints, but the amount available is limited.
