Barriers to Pursuing Plastic Surgery Among Canadian Trainees for Residents

Study Information and Consent

The purpose of this study is to identify the barriers that Canadian medical students and residents may face when pursuing a career in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and to understand how these barriers may affect trainees differently across diverse backgrounds. By identifying these challenges, this study seeks to inform efforts that promote equity, mentorship, and inclusivity within surgical education systems in Canada.

Participation in this study involves completing a one-time, anonymous online survey that will take approximately 7-10 minutes to complete. Your participation is entirely voluntary. You may exit the survey at any time prior to submission without penalty or consequence. Because the survey is anonymous, once responses are submitted, they cannot be withdrawn. No personally identifying information will be collected as part of this survey. All responses will be kept confidential and will be analyzed and reported in aggregate form only. There are no direct personal benefits to participating; however, your responses may contribute to a better understanding of systemic barriers within plastic surgery training and help inform future initiatives to improve equity and inclusivity.

The results of this study will be shared through academic channels, including presentations at scientific conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals accessible to the broader academic and medical community. Because no identifiable contact information will be collected, participants will not be contacted directly when the results are published.
