Consumer Perceptions of Cybersecurity and Technology Use

Technology Use and Security Survey

Participants will be presented with the following statement prior to participation:
“This study examines how people perceive cybersecurity when using emerging technologies such as digital wallets, smart home devices, and wearable technologies. Participation involves completing a brief anonymous online survey that should take approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time without penalty. No personally identifiable information will be collected, and all responses will remain confidential.”
Participation in this survey is voluntary, and all responses will remain anonymous. No personally identifying information will be collected. The survey will take approximately 8–10 minutes to complete. You may choose to stop participating at any time without penalty.
By continuing, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old and consent to participate in this study.
Description of the research and participation

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Kristopher Baugh, a doctoral student completing a dissertation research project.
The purpose of this study is to better understand how people’s perceptions of cybersecurity influence their willingness to adopt and continue using emerging technologies such as digital wallets, smart home devices, and wearable technologies.
If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey. The survey includes questions about your experiences using digital technologies and your opinions about cybersecurity, trust, risk, and convenience when using these technologies.
The survey will take approximately 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. If you decide to participate, you may skip any question you do not wish to answer. If you wish to withdraw from the study at any time, you may exit the survey and your decision will be respected.
Risks and Discomforts
This research presents minimal risk to participants.
Some individuals may experience mild discomfort when reflecting on topics related to cybersecurity, privacy, or personal technology use. However, the survey does not ask for sensitive personal information.
To minimize any potential discomfort:
• Participants may skip any question they prefer not to answer
• Participants may stop the survey at any time without penalty
• No personally identifiable information will be collected
Potential Benefits
There are no direct personal benefits expected from participating in this study.
However, the results of this research may help researchers, organizations, and technology developers better understand how cybersecurity perceptions affect technology adoption. The findings may contribute to improvements in digital security practices and user trust in emerging technologies.
Protection of Confidentiality
Data collection during the survey will be kept confidential. We will do everything possible to protect your privacy.
The survey will be conducted anonymously, and no personally identifiable information such as names, email addresses, or IP addresses will be collected.
Survey responses will be stored on a password-protected computer and secure storage system accessible only to the researcher. The data will be used solely for academic research purposes.
Your identity will not be revealed in any publication or report resulting from this study.
Your participation in this research study is completely voluntary.
You may choose not to participate, and you may withdraw your consent to participate at any time. You will not be penalized in any way should you decide not to participate or if you choose to withdraw from the study.
